Default The Official 993 Oil Discussion Thread

As this subject seems to generate a considerable number of new threads, perhaps we could start a thread and make it a sticky? (Mods, if not please delete this thread).

Brand, type, frequency of change etc. an ongoing discussion can keep information relevant WITHOUT starting yet another thread.

Lets play nice!

Great idea. I recommend AMSOIL. I use it in my 993, motorcycle and other vehicles. Most of what I have read show it superior to other oils and I feel safe using it for one year or 25000 miles except on my Harley which I change at 5,000 miles which still keeps me going for about a year.I have used AMSOIL for 13 years and for my money it is the best on the market.

Mobil 1 15W50. Since I average about 1k mile per season, DIY oil changes are every two years with Porsche filters.

Great idea, only problem is there is a lot of information that is spread out over numerous threads.

Used to use Mobil 1 15-50, just switched to Brad Penn at last change.

Check out the latest issue of Excellence for a good discussion on oils suited for air/oil cooled cars.
They recommend a minimum ZDDP level of 1200-1500 ppm for wear protection and long engine life.

I am exclusively using V-twin these days - numbers above are why, also that particular oil is designed for hot spots (as encountered in air-cooled motorcycles), so its one of the best for my Turbo, since the turbos are oil lubricated and when shut off, the heat around the bearings tends to spike. My Blackstone results are getting better and better since switching, the PO used straight Mobile 1 and the results of oil analysis on that first change was not great. On every change since I switched to V-twin (two cycles so far), the metal content in the oil has dropped (should flatten out in the next change I figure).

I would say the downside is the Zinc is a bit high, which is harder on the catalytic convertors.

Cheers,

Mike

I like the idea of a never-ending oil debate thread!

In an effort to help everyone (including me) get themselves up to speed with the ongoing discussion(s), I pulled oil threads from the last 5 years and posted them here. I did my best to categorize them. Enjoy!!!

Wow, great info! I use Swepco 15x40 as recommended by my engine builder. My Car only see's track duty though and the very occasional back road drive.

+1 for making this a sticky. It is over discussed, and a trap for unsuspecting first time posters who put up the question. They get whacked with negative comments which both puts a negative tone to the board and is unwelcoming to what could be a new member.

If iit was a sticky, and we still get a new topic, one person could just write Welcome to the board! Look up five lines, post number 10 should get you started

I have completed one oil change and after reading a lot of posts went with Mobil 1 15W 50.

However, less than 3 months later, I am planning to switch to the Mobil 1 20W-50 V-twin mentioned above for the next one.

I have not seen this particular 15-50 Joe Gibbs oil discussed. But then again the search function has never been my friend.

Gibbs seem proud of it for: "Vintage German air-cooled engines" (how many of those are there?) and it even says "Air Cooled Motor Oil" on the label. The Nascar boys seem to like this oil and a vintage engine builder (Cosworths, etc., not Porsche) I know loves it. I believe it is made by Lubrizol for Gibbs, a Berkshire Hathaway company that makes the additives for other oil refiners - so they should know what they are doing.
