Default Used Oil Analysis Mobil V-Twin

I thought you N/A 993 owners would like to see these reports too:

Do you add any oil in between your changes? I need to add a quart every 1,000 - 1,200 miles on average, so after 4,000 - 5,000 miles I have technically changed out about 1/3 of the oil. Would this analysis be skewered with so much oil 'changed' along the way?? I've thought about doing one but wondered if it is a waste in my situation. Mostly curious. Thanks.

You can see from my UOA's that I have on occassion (10/29/10 and 11/20/09 reports) added <0.5 quarts to my oil level. Mainly to adjust the level after I bring the car home from service (rather it be slightly underfilled, than over). Not because the Turbo consumed oil during the 5,000 mile interval.

I do not add oil to either my 993TT or 987S due to consumption. The Boxster goes closer to 7,500 miles on oil changes (Mobil 1's 5W50)

And I think the reason Blackstone asks this question in the paperwork with your actual oil sample, is so they can make an adjustment in the report and analysis. But, I'm not exactly sure. Makes sense they would.

FYI, doing one UOA will tell you very little about your car. Only give you a base-line. Having several reports, over several years, tells you a lot, IMO. I buy the tests in bulk (6 pre-paid) from Blackstone. Costs about $19 each.

Good question.

I had considered using V-Twin, but shyed away due to the potential for it's very high levels of additives to adversely affect the cats. These additives are what "regular" Mobil 1 15-50 is mostly missing, so maybe a 50/50 blend of "regular" Mobil 1 15-50 and V-Twin 20-50 would bring ZDDP and other additives to a more balanced level?

I'm sticking with Brad Penn 20-50 for now. Haven't found a downside to it for use in 993's here in South Texas.

Jim, a few guys are doing the blend, like you.

This was a concern off mine too, but Kevin dismissed it, and I am good with that.

Brad Penn is an excellent choice, too, and guys like Spartan and Wagongotya run this oil in their track monster (changed after each event).

Compare the iron reading with those of a Boxster run on a low ZDDP oil: https://rennlist.com/forums/993-foru...-analysis.html

Sounds like it's not a good idea to send new/virgin oil to Blackstone for analysis.

Yes, BP is a blend. From what I understand, it may be a lot more dino than synth, something like 10 or 20 percent synth. Not sure how accurate that figure is, though.

I was blending Mobil 0W40 and 15W50 to bring the viscosity down a bit as well as bring the Zn and P levels up. The ambient temps are low up here so the engine doesn't run that hot. Perhaps I'll substitute the V Twin 20W50 in for the 15W50 now. The Mobil tech guys didn't see any problems with my first concoction.

Our local PCA region had a tech session were the guys from Brad Penn did a tech talk. Their "Green" oil is 100% dino, they only use the Penn region oil stock as a base oil, so their cracking can be very consistent.

As part of their "why we are different" pitch, was the base oil is consistent from batch to batch which allows them to have consistent cracking tower engineering to make consistent product. The base crude dino isn't changing from day to day / week to week based on the last "global" shipment.

They said the only benefit to synth is if you are seeing temps consistent above 300 degrees (Turbos on track days for example). So Kevin's V-Twin synth comments in regards to Turbos high heat needs, aligns with the V-Twin synth as a good alternative to dino to given the added assurance / protection in high heat applications.

The BP guys also had good answer to the concern over BP based on paraffin / waxey base oil from the same Penn region oil. All is taken care of in the cracking / processing, not a concern.

Blackstone maintains a good database of different types of fresh oil, so there's no need to send any oil into them unless, of course, it's something that they don't have on file.

Which type of V-twin 20/50 should we buy? Looks like there are a few different variants.
