Default Synth oils available in 0 or 5 weight ...the "good ones"?

Ok, so I know that the oils are out there. My real question is which are the "good" synth oils that have the street cred and "thumbs up" from our esteemed gurus
...I am looking at 0-5W/40-50. Thanks!

If you didn't catch hennymug's thread where Robin posted Dr. Hass' research on motor oils it's a must if not lengthy read. (Pick up the thread on 12/26.) I would suggest that the answer to your question lies somewhere between his research and your knowledge of your car and usage. And while it's not directly apparant which viscosity is the best for any particular car, Dr. Hass does list what has worked for him. My 95 with 18,000 street miles on the odo has always run with Shell Helix Ultra 5W-40 - mechanic's choice and certainly not by any revelation gleamed on my part, but at least acknowleged by Dr. Haas as one of the worthy contenders.

It's Robin's post that did prompt me to reassess my use of M1 15/50.

That said, I was wondering if some here, especially our gurus (: ) ) can recommend a synth in 0 or 5 weight/ 40 or 50. The Helix Ultra in 5w/40 certainly sounds good, but can't seem to find it locally (except on ebay!). there's also Amsoil in 5w/40, but again that's a mail-order deal. Maybe M1's 0/40 is the best "easy to get" synth to get??

Mobil1 5W40 Truck & SUV is available cheap at Wal-Mart, and has better additives than the 0W40. Is So.CA, I can't imagine you need 0Wxx oil.

Motul 300V 5W40 is the nectar of the gods, and priced accordingly, but is easily found via mail order.

If your in california I would just buy the 10-40 mobile motorbike oil. Im using it right now and had some pretty cold starts -30. You could feel the oil was thick but I has no lifter noise so it was still pumping ok at that temp. I do plan to get a thinner oil though but again it waaaay colder up here than the southwest. Its start at -10 no problem.

I was thinking of mixing motorbike 10-40 ( which has the additives for these air cooled engines) with a high end 0-40 oil ending up with a 5-40 ....

Yeah, I saw the Motul and Redline ...just pricey for my blood.

The M1 5w/40 ...interesting! I have never seen that ...guess I just "tune out" anything that says "truck/diesel." What are the additives put in oils designated "diesel" ; is it still kosher for P-car use? Is that SM rated to your recollection? Thanks!

The 5W40 is SL rated, not SM. The last analysis I did showed ~1100 Phosphorus and ~1400 Zinc, so better than Mobil1 0W40, but not quite as robust as the racing oils.

I've been told the HDEOs are great for air cooled porsches. I'm currently running Shell Rotella T 15W-40 (dyno) as per my mechanics recommendation, but was thinking of switching to the synthetic Rotella 5w40 or the mobil Delvac 1 5W-40 (sold by the gallon at the local auto parts stores) since they would be a little thinner at start up.

Doug Hillary had good luck with the latter:

Maybe he'll chime in here if he hasn't been chased off of rennlist.

Hope this helps,
James

As a diesel owner my understanding is that diesel grade oil has a higher detergent content which is necessary to bind the soot that rapidly collects in the oil. (ever seen oil in a diesel engine? - it's jet black about 200 miles after an oil change) Given the fact that the wear surfaces in diesels and gassers are pretty much the same I'd expect diesel rated oil is fine for our P-cars.

Ferrari is married to Shell Oil so any place that services Ferrari in your area will more than likely have Shell Helix on hand or be able to give you a lead. I found it at a small Porsche repair shop in my area that I hadn't even thought of, courtesy of a RL'ers tip. You never know where you might find what you want.

I'll see if I can attach the latest (that I have) Porsche Recommended Oil List. (Don't know what size it will upload as so it may be too big to attach) There are several 5w xx oils on the list. Presently I'm using the Elf (now Total) 5w40 myself (in the Pepper).

If i can't upload it here members to Renntech.org have access to it online.
