Default Do you have to change oil every year....

Due to a busy work year I have only put 2000 miles on my car this summer
Is it necessary to change the oil and filters again, or could I run another season?
It seems like such a waste , but if the oil is bad ....
Expert opinion would be greatly appreciated
Cheers

meh, yeah you'll get some acids and condensation in the oil, but I don't think its going to cause any major harm to leave it in there.

It depends if you don't want to take the time and money to change it.

You will get a lot of expert opinions on this topic.
One expert on air cooled 911 once told me there is nothing more wasted in this world than Mobil1.

It's not the time or the money, just seems like a huge waste

I've been changing the oil on my 911s once a year in the spring. Usually drive the car about 3-4K miles per year. Every time after I have an oil analysis done on the replaced oil I'm told I can go much further. So this year I bought a kit that can take an oil sample of the oil in the car. I'll send it for analysis and if it comes back encouraging I won't change the oil.

even if you drive it 5k miles, its probably a waste to change it.

Most of these modern synthetics can go way longer.

I don't see the need to change it.

I am one of those wasters. I change the daily drivers every 5,000 miles and the garage queens every year. For me, it is cheap peace of mind.

I usually waste it with 3-5000 miles at the end of a season. I only have 1500 miles this year so I have a bit of a dilemma.

If nothing else the annual change gets you under the car to take a look and see what is going on--if anything. It is cheap insurance

The real solution to this problem is...YOU NEED TO DRIVE YOUR CAR MORE!

It's a total waste but if it gives you peace of mind than no reason not to do it. It wont harm the car. But there is not one benefit either.

I change it once a year and average 4-6k mi. per year. Although I wouldn't feel it's a huge detriment if you put it away for a couple months and change it out next season.

I gotta believe the oil doesn't know if it's been 12 or 16 months. Not really a big deal. Just be sure to drive it more next season!! :-)

+1 on the engine oil analysis. Why throw away oil that still has lots of life left?

The 993 Maintenance book says to change the oil every 15,000 miles.

But there's a separate section called "Recommended Yearly Service" under which it says "intended for vehicles which accumulate low yearly mileage between required service intervals." That section says to change engine oil. I would guess that 2,000 miles qualifies as low yearly mileage.

Regardless, if I were in your shoes I'd skip it until next year.
