Having already spent a considerable sum on cars over the last 18 months I'm willing to try 8/10 first.

Check out surprise in the pic below! I'm astounded how well these cars are engineered. That valve has been operating on the little spring for who knows how long Frankly, I couldn't tell the difference in drivability though I am glad we found it. No damage done to any of the valve train. The seat washer is pretty chewed up though you can't really see in the pic
Crikey. Testament to the build quality?! Were the guys surprised it didn't do more damage? Does it run silly smooth now because it was pretty good before I thought.

Now you get to just drive it! Finally!

You might need one of those. But it looks like a job where you have to take heaps of photos to get the gazillions of rings and seals back together.

Seal kit for the steering rack from ebay Germany.

Too much at stake there Ralf, that part I'll leave to the specialist. I will however remove and reinstall myself IF it turns out to be Herman and not the Golf.

First up I will tackle the engine mounts on the Turbo 3.6. I'll hit Dave up for tips there, especially how he sorted the deep socket for the central bolt.

@ Walter and Tony - perfect day for laying down some fast laps. Text me if you have problems with finding BB etc, then getting her going.

Buy my rack so I can upgrade to a non-powered unit!

Good luck with BB guys, looking forward to seeing some more times on the board.

Bloody generous of you mate. Only just saw this post (I think we both must have posted same time earlier tonight and I missed it). Ive sent you a PM of thanks. Id already sold Joanna on the Cayenne so Im very sorry but my confessions of 964 superiority and turbo domination will have to wait another day :-). Again thanks.

John. Should be easy enough to check. Have become a bit of an expert on these as Jos Outback does a rack every few years (boots get torn from inner tie rod articulation, coral gets on the shafts and scores the bore and seals etc). Check the fluid level. If that's not a give away then start the car and turn the wheels hard lock left and right. Hold the wheel down at the lock stops for 10-15 seconds in each direction then check under the car for leakage. Youll soon tell which car is the offender. I hope its the golf as Donna has no more room for shoes!

On the engine mounts - it was fortuitous you swapped them out on Herman. Those turbo ones are really shot. The Turbo engine is heavier and there is more heat but the ones from the C4 should at least buy you time and for $1500 a pair save you some coin at least during this budget cycle. On the bright side the 3.6T has cost you very little to maintain over the last decade so its a very small blemish.

It does run a little better once hot. That could be a result of the service as well. The idle is a bit flakey when cold with some stalling and hunting. I've cleaned the ICV and they don't think there is any vacuum leaks or other issues. Peter believes it is a problem with old electronics trying to manage old mechanicals. Any thoughts on this?

I had a plan to get a Steve Wong chip eventually but will bring that forward as I have some exhaust changes planned. It may help the idle though frankly i'd rather fix the underlying issue if there is one that trying to kludge a fix

Doug had an unstable idle that Dan tried to fix on the South Island tour by cleaning the ISV. I also tried to help by resetting with the Scantool. In the end it was fixed by buying a new ISV.

What year is Mr Black? The ECU box is easy to access. You could plug I'm my one with the Wong chip and see if you like it before stumping up cash.

Fluid level is ok in the reservoir, however I have to be realistic here, as the Turbo 3.6 was done in 2001, at 70,000km, just before I bought it. Herman has 149,000km on the clock so it would be time.

When I wrote silky smooth I meant the sound not the idle. Interestingly the idle was usually very solid, except when running AC. It would occasionally idle unstably when cold but only rarely. Maybe there is something getting old and causing an intermittent issue (1991). SW will probably sort it (just don't tell Peter).

Exhaust changes? Too loud? The sound is the bit I miss the most about Mr Black. Really growly without being Bogan (maybe I'm Bogan in denial).

The 1050 is fabulous but hasn't had enough use over winter; usual owners lament. Hauling out in Nov for new bum paint, topsides polish, GRP touch up in the cockpit and a few deferred interior cracks. Also putting a hot water cylinder in to keep the missus happy. Can you recommend a painter in viaduct or nearby? Also an engineer for hot water fittings?

My 1997 993 rack was re sealed in 2007 at 25000k's, it leaked.
