The right tip with the right engine, and right buyer can bring real money. My wife's 993 tip with FSI R39 (3.9L) engine and a built up 4 speed sold for 85K in a private sale with one of my favorite customers a few months back. With that trans built up the shifting was a lot more positive, especially on down shifts, where the 4 speed tip usually sucks.
Some people favor the tip, in my case my wife has vein issues in her left leg and it was all she could do to set her Land Speed Records driving a manual. Daily driving just isn't realistic for her with a manual.
I love the performance of a 996 with a Tiptronic. They suck down more power on the chassis dyno, but configured with my top secret Tiptronic torquer combo, they scream and will spank the pants off of a manual 996 of the same generation when it comes to a 0-100 MPH comparison. The additional torque really makes the Tiptronic perform, and this is true with the 964/993 variant, as well as the 996 or even the later 997 variant. One of the fastest cars I've driven was a 996 C4S Tiptronic with a Stage II @4.0L, it was a screamer, and sounded awesome as it pulled the tall gearing through 3rd and 4th gears. I personally prefer any 3 pedal car, but we do a lot of Tip work, and have been impressed with the evolution of my Tiptronic combos.

I'm not knocking the Tip. I've had both ZF & AMG Tips over the years. Horses for courses. All I said was "no love" w/911 collectors, and there ain't; hence the $25K hammer. Another way to look at this is: with 90K miles that was a $12K Tip only two years ago . Even the ZF 996 Tips are doubling values now, while the 964/993 Tip's remain stuck. And that is really something
The 996 tip is a 5 speed, the 964/993 is a 4 speed.

At the end of the day I see that modern buyers don't buy the car that they want- they buy what they think that their buddies will be impressed with. They feel like their buddies will consider them to be a P***y if they own a Tiptronic car.
There's nothing better than a Tiptronic spanking the pants off a 6 speed in those scenarios. People are too damn worried about what other people think.

I agree 99% of drivers will be faster in the automatic (myself included). My perfect car is an AMG Tip X-50 or S, but I have yet to find one in a unicorn color unfortunately. IMO there has never been a better "match made in Stuttgart" than the turbocharged Mezger 3.6 and AMG Tiptronic. That car drives like it has no transmission; like there is literally one single gear from 0-7K RPM. Nothing but deafening heart-stopping boost to redline. I had one (in Speed Yellow no less) and foolishly sold it. I foolishly sell them all

Most people probably discount a Tip for the same reasons as above, not necessarily because of what other people think. For those who use the opinions of others to dictate their choices in life aren't truly living, but that's inherently a THEM problem.

If you want a fast car (that will spank any 996 on-track, off-track, and cost a fraction to own) get a Tesla.
If you want an experience car, buy a pre-2006 manual-transmission car.
Fast, or experience. Would love someone to explain where a Tiptronic Porsche excels over a Tesla 3. Slower in every way, worse around a track, worse interior, more expensive, the list goes on.

I gotta respectfully disagree. It's a simply binary choice IMO.

Anything is better than driving around an electric vacuum cleaner.

No doubt automatics will beat manuals every day of the week. Just at the cost of experience. Pull experience out of a (slow) car like the 996, and what is left? Just my humble opinion having owned many of the coolest cars the last 20 years.

I know I am in trouble when someone says "my buddies can't wait till I get my car back from you".
As soon as that happens a special set of protocols go into place, a red flag is risen on their ticket, and we just wait.
