BAT won't refund their money but the credit card companies will take it from them. The buyers claim false advertisement and pay nothing.

So now BAT just lost a couple grand, no big deal. with about 80 auctions ending daily I think they can handle a few bad apples.

For the record, I enjoy BAT and buy there. Some really good cars and for the most part, insightful comments

BaT and Cars and Bids only provide a service connecting buyers and sellers. These services aren't at all responsible for what's delivered, for payment, or lack of payment, or anything in between. Read the terms catefully.

They'll pressure sellers to lower their asks when an auction doesn't close, and offer no assistance when a buyer is a dreamer without funds. Ask me how I know. On second thought, don't.

These are glorified listing services with the illusion of a binding auction. Even selling or purchasing a pen on eBay comes with more protection on both sides of the transaction. Coupled with the obvious shill and fraudulent bidding and self-sales, make these sites toxic.

Since the sale, the copywriting at BaT is egregiously bad, and the comments are all but worthless except for a few niche models. Worse, the insanity has seeped into classifieds listings here and elsewhere.

E30 M3s are like driving a toilet. Other than showing off at radwood they're absolutely junk.

Wow this thread has created a new term -- BaT sniping.

I've purchased two cars on BaT; both transactions were transparent, honest and upright. My feeling is that the vast majority of them are that way.

I also went to look at an older 911 that was advertised there and local to me. The car was stripped out and painted to look like a race car, but it was really just a ratty, rusty old girl in need of a dose of tough love. The guy offered to end the auction and sell the car to me at his reserve price, and right then I knew I would not be doing business with him. I took some pictures of rust holes and sunshine where there shouldn't be any, and sent them to the seller -- who, amazingly, posted them to BaT. Commenters weren't fooled by the car though, and bidding stalled. Lo and behold, two new bidders arrive to run the bidding up to just a wee tad below reserve. Where the bidding died and the car went unsold. I emailed this whole story to BaT who responded that new bidders appear all the time, yada yada. I'm not sure how much more they could have done after the fact, but it would have been nice for them to maybe say they'd mark the seller as suspicious.

So, no, they don't have a shiny bright reputation in my book. But I still love the site and the lively chatter. As always I rely on my own nose to sniff out fraud.

A few Auction houses have the goods on a consistent basis. Goodings and RM come to mind. They play in an arena that’s foreign to the average buyer though.

BAT has a few sellers that I would buy anything from sight unseen. 911R in the Northwest immediately comes to mind. As always and as the post above me points out, buy the seller. In most cases get to know the seller get to know the car. Problem is some sellers are good actors. I need to write a book about how to spot a bad seller.

I don’t think these auctions are perfectly flawless. For a couple of years I did restoration on euro bemmers and benzes. Barret Jackson, Meccum are ok, yes both of them have bidders that call in. I been bidding on bat on some Carrera S and also some 996s specially factory Aeros, early cars in blue, 40th. Plenty of times I have seen new bidders popping out, where I questioned if they where real, and bidders that seem to push the price for the same seller. Just be careful.

I’m still trying to figure out what your comment really means. I get the jist of it but it isn’t making sense. Care to explain in more detail?

I ain’t mad at ya. We all like different things. It’s what makes this world so exciting to be apart of.

Hey guys. Has anybody tallied up the total 996s sold on Bat and PCar by gen 1 and 2 coupes, cabs and C4s; and then run the numbers as % of total of each sold new?

After scrolling down thru the list of cars sold or bid for, seems like there are a lot more Gen 1s over Gen 2s, and a lot more cabs than coupes.

I recognize that there were more Gen 1s produced than Gen 2s which would account for the volume. But it looks to me like there aren't a lot of Gen2 coupes that have been listed.

Does this mean that many guys like me just won't sell their Gen 2 coupe? Could this be an indication of future value for Gen 2 coupes? Maybe.

Your data simply simply confirms what I’ve been saying for years: MKII Coupes are astronomically rare.

Porsche made many thousands more C4S than MKII Coupes 02-05

Eventually the market will reflect this fact

As the weather warms up in Chicago over the next week, I will enjoy driving around my rare Gen 2 coupe!
