That red 4s was a beaut. I've been following the 997s more closely and its interesting to see the prices between the two generations. Not as wide as it once was.

997.1 and 997.2 are so different its hard to judge them as 1 generation. My personal opinion is that 997.1 cars will ultimately become the "cheapest" 911.

I have been keeping perfunctory tabs on 997.1 prices and they seem to be going lower and lower. Is there anything inherently wrong with a .1 ?
(Let's not start a bore scoring debate again, plzzzz)

I don't think there is anything inherently wrong with the 997.1 but the 997.2 was such an upgrade that it's caused a large price gap within that generation. I view the 997.1 as more akin to being a 996.3, but with round headlights.

The interior is drastically different imo from a 996.2 to a 997.1

I don't know about the broader market, but for me the fact that the IMS was not proactively replaceable on the 997.1 made it an absolute non-starter for me. I know the 997.1 IMS bearing has proven to be very robust, but the fact that it couldn't be replaced as the 997s are getting much older now was something I just didn't want to worry about. My 996 is a forever car -- I will never sell it -- but dual row and replacing the IMS every 50k miles as maintenance was much more attractive than a 997.1 that could never be replaced.

Weight-wise, a 997.1 c2/6sp/coupe weighs 174 lbs more than a 996.1, and 124 lbs more than a 996.2, which isn't too bad.. I don't necessarily prefer the headlights of the 997 over the 996.1, but I do like the 997 body shape better. The 997.2 weighs 285 lbs more than the 996.1.

Agreed. Looked at a couple 997.1's but there's a few things that deterred that decision, and will for the future. The 3.4L in earlier 996's is what sold it. Would love a 997.2, but who knows what the next car will be, or if the 996 will ever leave.
