Gone from 5 cars to 2 in a week, so if anyone needs a garage spot for a month or so over xmas, I have a secure space available. Only catch is that It has to be serious dribble inducing material not a Honda or anything like that.

The Golf R was a short lived experiment then Dave, or is that one of the two?

Struggling to keep up with the posts, made more difficult by analysing two bucket car wash techniques. Where can we find this car wash?!

Doug, I think you can buy a mod that allows cab top control while moving. RS60 is a better bet IMO but if you're considering it (or any other ex uk car) give me a call first.

Macca, feedback is a hassle and difficult to diagnose. You could try a ferrite bead inline with whatever is impacted by the dirty power feed, or rerunning cables with better shielding.

Having been one myself, I know how the teenage (and almost middle age) male mind works.

They will be grounded from the age of 13 to ............. well a long - long time......

I just got passed (and rather quickly) by a primo 996 C2.

I heard it first, it had a very nice aftermarket something going on.

The rims, stance and camber were perfect for a 996, and it had a 70's retro Porsche strip in black (same as Cayman R) - it was the 'muts nuts' for a subtle 996 retro hotrod.

I couldn't get a decent photo as he was driving too fast, but did manage to see a PCNZ sticker - Graham you may know the car (I'm in Wellington at the mo)

Seriously for low $30K's - I think these 996 manual NZ cars with under 100K are bargains and could be tempted to swap the Audi for one as an experiment in 2015........

Chris B - would be interested on your experiences of 996 ownership and what you thought?

Like Dave, I think I might have to start a special 996 subtle hotrod p*rn collection folder.......

Maybe add a half cage for targa touring and RSG days...??

This thread does move quickly. Back in early July we thought we might make 997 pages for Chris M to celebrate Independence Day. Now we have 1,360 pages, 20,400 replies and 517,000 views.

Interesting stuff but enquiring minds want to know:

1. How many lurkers do we have if there are 25 views for every post?

2. How much more would I get done if the App didn't make updates so easy to follow?

3. Will our wives start looking at our posts? If so, Walter make sure the dog box is comfortable!

4. Will Walter learn to monitor the fuel gauge?

5. Who will buy and sell cars in 2015?

6. Will Dave sell enough cars in 2015 to qualify as a dealer?

7. When will Lola and the Pumpkin be on the road?

8. Will Paul drive his resprayed car on B roads?

9. Will we ever break BB?

Unless they have a ball breaker attitude, then you let them out and have a laugh at the carnage they cause.

The Golf R was excellent. I made a lowball offer for it and the guy accepted so I felt obliged to go through with the deal. Anyway, gone to a good home now. It is quite a good one if not a little neglected but it's coming right. Had it three weeks and it was starting to feel good. I will definitely look for another when things settle down a bit. That bit of impulse buying aside, I'm hoping that lady rings me back with the roughy 911. I should have got her number so I could do some hard chasing.

Paul. You might be onto something. These cars would suit RSG. The outlay is low, we can give then a hard time on track and not feel guilty like the appreciating relics. Nice clean early shape 996s looking better by the year. For under 40K a well sorted car with some small RSS improvements for handling and decent pads and tyres should be good for 1.16s at HD one would have thought....

Dave. You crack me up. Got it out of your system now I hope!

To quote the Panteen ad - "It won't happen over night, but it will happen"

You are asking a tiger to change it's stripes...........

Macca - they would have to be low 1.15's...??

My best recorded time was a 1.16.2 in the 993, and on the right day with a set of 214's and a little more DT, a mid 15 was there.

I need to do more DT - Stu Owers in the passengers seat found 0.5 second in 3 secessions.

Back to 996's - they are the same weight, with bigger brakes, more HP, more torque and better suspension - so naturally there must be a second in it (set-ups being equal).

I need to google non-mez 996's at the track and see the internet communities view on whether one goes there or not.............

Default McLaren P1 - wow

Took one for the team and looked over MattH's P1 with him at lunchtime. His car is spectacular on every level, and with some nice personalizations. Sensuously sinister and sounds as good it looks:

The interplay of shiny and matte black plus naked carbon fibre rocks. She still has the factory delivery protection on the steering wheel hub etc for now but she will see some road.

Yes, but will go back for more later in the year with another Mk6 R or lowball a punter with a Mk7 GTi. The fun is in the chase.

996's. Very tempting. Even though the engine maladies are talked up a fair bit, I still don't trust them. Said the same about 964's years ago but time sorts them out and they become good cars eventually.
You read a fair bit about UK specialists solving the individual problems rather than needing total engine replacements. I wonder when some of this tech will make it down here? An opportunity for a local indy to pick up the tech under licence perhaps? I'd be all over a sorted one.

A MK1 996 is an emerging design classic. It Takes a while for these things to happen but when you see an early basic one now, they do carry a bit of elegance and purity. In my opinion, the MK2 is not a looker at all. Subtle differences to the MK1 but enough to make it ugly. Cow eyes for a start. The fried eggs looked better.

Yes I am really liking the simplicity of the earliest 996's too:
