Took one for the team and looked over MattH's P1 with him at lunchtime. His car is spectacular on every level, and with some nice personalizations. Sensuously sinister and sounds as good it looks:









The interplay of shiny and matte black plus naked carbon fibre rocks. She still has the factory delivery protection on the steering wheel hub etc for now but she will see some road. Thanks Matt - enjoy her!

Thanks Walt and MattH, very cool. Hopefully I'll see it in the flesh some day! Is there a non-invasive way to fit license plates front and rear? I can't bear the thought of that beautiful CF being drilled.

Saw that 996 on Saturday, looked and sounded great, especially next to the sewing machine (my 997TT). Like all of us, the 996 is aging well...
The P1 is an amazing piece of machinery on paper and must only be better in person. I imagine it has tow hooks of some sort, so could be an option for plate mounting?

Buba. You did have 214 on the 993 that day. On the front wheels remember. Good for reducing the understeer I hear! Good point tho. Even a guy who has almost 2000 HD laps can benefit by a significant amount by time with a pro. Half a second at that level is a big jump. Steve's best in the 997 at was I believe around 1.17s but that was on Toyo R888 which must give at least 1-1.5s up on the Z214/221 combo surely.

Matt. Congrats on the P1. Very interesting car. Be good to hear your driving impressions on road and track.

Dave/Paul, Im right with you on the Gen 1 996. Keep it simple with he original uncluttered body style. Its just right without adornments. Its lighter than the 993 by 30-40kg. With some suspension work and a little intake/exhaust tickle I have no doubt it would equal or better Pauls best in the 993 on similar tyres.

John, the 3.6T is being put back together. I popped in there to pay my bill. Richard is going to see one hell of a PPI invoice - its basically 3 days work! Sounds like its all good. No Toyota parts found apparently.

The Italians say the "whine" on the AIM Smartycam HD rev 2.0 with external microphone is standard issue!! They say the gain is set for full cockpit noise and will reduce as the volume reduces. Makes no sense. Why not link it to the Rpm code line (linx) surely its not hard its already there when connected to Solo & ECU. Doesnt happen with GoPro external mike. Not a satisfactory answer IMO. There may be a firmware revision which enables manual gain control in the future. Prototyping again. Its a shame as the camera is a serious piece of kit, all milled out of billet alloy and totally waterproof, honestly makes GoPro and Sony look like plastic kids lego sets.

Nots sure whos around over the weekend but if anyone wants a drive on 28 or 29 let me know. Ive been out every day getting my fill. Car very dirty now. Tomorrow is wash day.

That P1 is awesome!! I remember seeing the original F1 at a car show at Pukekohe racetrack many years ago and just admiring the thought and design that went into it. The P1 is that all over again. I hope we get a chance to see it in person at a RSG event..... please

I do remember, but half the package (only 2 x 214's) hinders the overall performance and tire balance. Yes car turned in, but didn't power out without spinning the rear wheels, you may recall me whinging about not getting the power down and wanting to buy an LSD if you look about 400 pages back.......

The only way to improve was to soften front shocks and stiffen rear's to 9 on the settings. This dropped my times from 18's to low 17's instantly......

The 214's on the front dropped the times from 16.8's to 16.2's. I'm sure 214's on the back and finally resolving the rear suspension/sway bar settings would easily find another 3-4/10th's for a 15.??

I wasn't a huge fan of 221's as I personally found they went off quite quickly (i.e. you get 4 track days with the first 2 being noticably better).

My fav's are still the old Bridgestones. They lasted longer and my times where no quicker on the 214's in the C3??

Whereas I went through a set of 221's on the SITT, and then another set of fronts with an RSG track day and 2 x PCNZ sprints.

Did we ever get a consensus on the Nitto's (that aren't road legal) and how quick they where in the tire line up??

The 996 convertible is now out of the question as the deadline for sale is tomorrow and she goes into a container for a move to Aussy if not sold prior. I'm now at Oakura Bay so all too hard.

All this talk about how sweet 996s look. I still love the look of my Gen 1 Cayenne. Maybe everyone else will too in another 15 years?

I prefer the 996 gen 2 lights to the poached eggs look.

I think they are passable on a Turbo or C4S with a bit of extra bumper detail, but on a normal coupe with that very plain front end it makes it the ugliest 911 ever made! They messed with the rear bumper of the MK 2 as well to its detriment.

Dougie - so you would consider a 996 cab then in place of a Boxster?

I dunno Paul. Not nearly as nice as a boxster comparing with both the roofs down. On the 996 and 997 you have to **** around with a manually installed windstop. Butt ugly with it too IMO. The Boxster nestles you in under the wind naturally, you get two boots and better balance. Pity you don't get as much power though.

You've no doubt driven both too. If you wanted open air for sub $60k which way would you go?

Boxster S offers amazing bang for buck IMO.
