Meanwhile back to real problems. Email received this morning
"Ms X has asked me to write you regarding Cameron eating a large pizza-shaped lolly at school before the bell this morning.
This is against school rules but also there obvious health and learning implications when kids are eating things made entirely of chemicals, including harmful colourants.
He has been told by Ms X not to repeat this and I’m sure we have your support in this matter".
I am tempted to respond, but at my age realise the first reaction may be the wrong way to handle this transgression.
Secretly I'm wondering how a Greens supporter nut bar got a visa into the Bays. There should be a law against it.

One way to simplify having multiple Porsches is to prang one. Then you get less choice on which one to drive and a new project to rebuild it. Simple really (ha ha).
Next the steering and steering wheel feel was sublime. I think nicer than 9x7.
The boxster/cayman platform with mid-engine has great balance. It's small and light handling and you can really throw it around. You throw the 911 around also but it feels a little heavier and less agile. Only a bit though. And the Cayman is definitely better handling - more power and more rigid, less creaks and rattles from the rag top.
My 986 non-S boxster had only 2.7 litres and I think something like 220hp. It had a brilliant 5 speed box (which I prefer on track and road over the 6 speed) due to the ratios feeling really good.
Being a little low on power meant you had to drive it really hard to get the best out of it. And that feels and sounds great.
No cup holders mean you need to use some ingenuity, modify, and its a right PITA if you enjoy coffee and driving.
With the 987 Boxster S, it's a great car, but putting your foot into it means you're unleashing 295hp in a small car and are breaking lots of laws quickly and not quite experiencing the same thrill of getting it up there. Don't get me wrong. I love it, and upgraded because I got pissed at being left behind at HD all the time. The 987 keeps up well. Hell, even Paul loves it :-P
This may make littles sense to anyone reading it. It's hard to put the feel and subjective experience of driving into words on paper.
Take a manual 986 Boxster or Boxster-S for a drive some time. You'll possibly be quite surprised. The S has more power and 6 speed with bigger brakes but the standard car is a hell of a lot of fun.

Nice write up Doug. Ive driven the 986 derivative extensively at Mt Cotton and thought it was a great car. I drove manly the S, found the non S a little underpowered for the chassis. I love the simple clean lines too and its destined to be a classic shape - uncluttered. Great value. Always interesting to hear someones qualified view on the subject. I guess its like any generation of Porsche, they get faster but heavier and bigger.

Macca - I just learned something new - apparently 993's are water cooled according to Total 911

Three Wheelin'
completely agree with Doug on 986 Boxster. Like Macca I also drove this model at Mt cotton but the 2.5 just before the release of the S. The suspension was relatively soft but such a sweet handling car. Not enough power to get into too much trouble. One of the instructors was much more liberal in pressing the edges and he taught me the art of trail braking on the road course in the Boxster. In the clockwise direction at the end of the straight there is a fast downhill entry right hander and back up the hill. Without trail braking there was understeer as you come off the brake and head to the apex and had to wait to get hard on the gas. With trail braking the nose positively lept to the apex and on the gas straight away. Like night and day. The Boxster was the only car that could have given me that experience as a newbie in a benign way yet still 160kph entry into a downhill corner with trees off the road. A bit Targa like really, but many years before I got into that.
