Nice work everyone. Sorry to hear Chris - and especially Matt - didn't get to drive the event out. Good on you for getting out there and it happens to the best sometimes.

Hey - we are onto page 911 !!!!!

Loving the pic's Walter.

Question - Is grid 1 at HD on the Pit side or the Apt side of the track. I am guessing the pit side, but don't know for sure??

Nicely noticed Paul - didn't realise we'd hit 911 pages on the thread! P1 at HD is the inside one, by the pit wall. That was my understanding from the last sprints, and supported here: http://www.chrishanley.net/news/hampton-downs-round-6. "Starting from grid 1, I got an average start and Wardy who started from P2 managed to get ahead of me from the outside of the track, but I kept my line and dived down the inside going into turn 2 to take back the lead."

It had quite a cool period race seat for a drivers seat.

Let me know if you are interested. I will be buying one before the enduro in a few weeks.
Thanks for sharing Chris. Got close to pulling the trigger and looks a great device but I'd been keen to find something though that would also work a bit with the stock 3 point belt. I know there is not the same risk of basal skull fracture with a 3-point as when your shoulders are both strapped in tight in a racing harness, but I still wanted something that minimises whiplash for front, side and rear impacts. The only one I knew of was the Simpson R3, which was a bit of a pain because it had a long bar running down the spine but on calling Flamecrusher about the R3 they advertised, they put me onto the new Simpson Hybrid Sports (carbon composite, a lighter update of the Hybrid Pro Rage). Hard to get solid info on use with a 3-point but the Simpson website did say that it could be used without being attached to any belts so it looks feasible to me.

They're happy to match that same group buy pricing for anyone here else who may want a head and neck restraint system that works very well with a harness (SFI 38.1 certified) but also looks to still be of some use with a factory 3-point belt.

Hey J

I love him. Took a bit of a drive out to piha. Interesting dynamic when the car goes over smallish rises into troughs. The front end feels very light. Manageable but surprising. Possibly too much rebound damping? Or just a characteristic of a rear engined car?

My wife (who couldn't car less about cars) once driven it, adores it. So a big win there. She originally questioned me buying another car but know thinks it was a great idea.

I'm having MS sort the seals in the diff. I was going to do it myself but its a bugger of a job getting the torque tube off and managing the subframe by myself in a small garage made me leave it to the pros

I have to sort my avatar out

For those not on Facebook. A share from Mr Higgins of his 3.8 RS, the ultimate 964?

It amazes me that they raced with Speedlines. Not the lightest wheel out there.

I would imagine back then that 18" rims with those RSR offsets were like hens teeth in New Zealand, probably just a function of limited options.

They have been racing with three piece for 30 years. I think they may even still do it. Not for weight but strength and ability to repair and reuse the centres (cost). A cast wheel is hopeless it it take a bad bend on a chicane - you cant easily repair it without compromising its strength. A forged wheel is lighter and more expensive. It can be reshaped but of its a big hit the whole wheel is all over (throw away). A three piece means you can throw away you outer hoop keep the barrel and the centre, reform the inner barrel lip on a machine if required, bolt on the hoop and you have a perfect wheel again. On the track the weight isnt so important due to handicapping. Unsprung mass yes. I think until very recently there were few realistic and feasible alternatives.

The BBS e88s are very light though, 5lbs lighter than the Speedlines and definitely a better option if you can get them.

Is it a real 3.8 RS? Was it always a race car or did it start life as a road car?

Hmmm.... These are what Yoda recommended for me and what we used (newly scrubbed in) on the Targa Tour. They're my second set and now less than half worn and good all round, especially if it gets a bit wet. But you guys all recommend z221's so, when these are exhausted I'll try them on my 17" rims. Unfortunately they don't make a Z221 for the 964's 16" rims but R888's are available. As Yoda says, wheels smaller faster go.

Thanks Graeme. I'll try the 17's with R888s (also which Yoda instructed on Saturday. He said get rid of those old tyres. I'm slowly picking up the hint.

Yes, we talk of taking it easy, but it's so hard to actually do. The talk goes out the window on the day. I just hope it is fine. I like it in the wet but the risks of getting it wrong and being uninsured at the same time go up heaps too.
