John, make sure to replace the $40 seal behind this plate (picture from my own box in late 2012). Its cheap insurance (I had just replaced clutch in 2011 with LWFC, when it started to weep towards end of Targa NZ 2012 and necessitated a whole new clutch replacement!).

Already sorted Macca. You reminded me when I had the box out in 2013.

I'm resisting the temptation to clean the engine as I want to see the tell tales of leaks first. The crank position sensor looks very oily. Hope it's not the RMS seal as I'd rather leave the clutch and flywheel in place.

Aren't we all by degrees. I appreciate the heads up on these items. My time is free and I have a few months to go through everything.

Cool. Just trying to think of things Ive done while the engine is down. As you say this is the time to do this stuff and as you have plenty of time with the engine out on your garage floor and your time is free you can save alot of money having this stuff done while you are awaiting the box repair. That's a luxury I did not have and made it a much more expensive proposition. It gets a bit annoying when you ask the tech what needs doing while its out and they say it all looks good then you bolt it back up and a few months later something like the dissi needs attention and you are back to paying labour to strip parts off to get to the offending item! Im sure we all have the T shirt..

So glad I persevered with keeping the engine on the ATV jack. Now the transmission is off it's a relatively manageable 250kg that I can move around the garage and raise 25cm, a great height for working from a stool.

As you say, so much is accessible when the engine is out e.g. checking the power steering belt requires removing two bolts on a cover. Done in 5 minutes.

I'll remove the intake manifolds to better see where the leaks are coming from. I may yet cough up for an engine crane and yoke (I already have the stand) if I want to work on the underside. This is not the last time I will work on an air cooled engine

John. Its a good idea to remove the inlet manifold while you have it all accessible. The Banjo bands clamp over a rubber sleeve/flange. Check for the integrity of the flange and when you bolt it all back up make sure each is firmly placed and square onto the flange before tightening the banjos up. Some of the most common leaks are when this manifold gets knocked around when other work is done and the banjos move or the banjos perish or do not sit square. Not sure if that makes any sense. Belts are a good idea while you are in there. Easy to check the from RMS but need a specialised tool to replace it IIRC - something to do with the camshaft position. Great idea to use a black and tackle to get it onto the engine stand. They cant be too expensive.

Yes, it's my happy place. Like most things, as long as the hobby doesn't become a business it's all fun.

Not sure about any cracks. It's a non stressed part so unless there is a casting flaw I don't think there should be any usage cracks.
