Fair points John. To do the DD and taking to the track as a tripper "till it breaks" a cheap 964 may do the job. But I think more fun could be found on another platform for less $$ and heartache.

Really good to hear you will be at the Festival with Paul and I in Jan. That gives you a great hard target date...

A fair bit going on behind the scenes. The body shop appears to be working on multiple cars so hard to get a deadline date. John is going to help the critical path by swapping out the rear shocks with spares so I can get the RUF Bilsteins off to be refurbed before Christmas holidays start. The gearbox should be finished in a few days and I can get it mated back to the engine, ready for the install, when I am back in NZ. The rest is already sourced, but it's still going to be tight. At least I am putting things back together so munted fasteners etc are not an issue.

Sounds like you have it under control John. I've yet to see a painting deadline that was met. It's the nature of the industry. If you run out of time you can always leave the passenger seat out :-)

[QUOTE=Macca;12773358]Dont get Buba-itis mate." You tart up your ride and then park it". Seriously this should be a warning to others on here "don't paint your car"!! :-)

^^^^ agreed - it cost me my 993 marriage.

Macca will be dark on me for ever and a day for leaving the fold.

I agree with Cayman idea too - but in saying this has anyone seen a sub $50K manual Gen 1 S for sale lately.

Steve was saying we should all look towards the manual 996's for circa $30K.

Taking seats in and out is very easy so that won't hold me back.

BTW I'm updating the build on a 964 forum thread. Here's a pic of the gearbox I posted yesterday. Not much left to do there.

Not in manual. Lots of tip caymans have come and gone at low to mid $30's but manuals seem to be $10-15k higher.

A few Boxster's have shifted in mid 20's though - the question is, what is that $30k worth in terms of build to make the Boxster perform as good as or better than the Cayman? Surely that cash could be spent on a cage and roof that would bring it in line or surpass the Cayman, that would still be stock and running the same engine.

Or there's something like this... http://www.speedhunters.com/2014/09/...rsche-boxster/

I know you've had the planetary gears welded. Did your guys comment on how they are holding up? As you probably remember Jason had Mr Blacks done a couple of years ago and i'm interested to see how said solution works longer term

Here's the pic. Dan praised the welding job and said no issues whatsoever

Good read about the GTS, redline is much lower than I expected though, 2,000rpm less than the GT3! Anyone here have a GTS? I wonder how many they sold in NZ.

Speaking of good Lotus track cars, this thing would be very quick:
http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/used...-854907877.htm

Sticking to Porsche though it's be interesting to see a $50k 996 vs Cayman S battle. I'm sure if you spent the same amount on each the 996 and the 987 then 996 would be faster, until it's IMS fails or it scores the bores

I have an idea for that cheap 964 C4 can I'll post some pictures of later. For under 8k that could become a coupe stiffened up to be perfectly enjoyable on the road and track and look quite special too...

Nah Buba. Not at all. I told you long time GT3 was right car for you. Plus you were down on 993 for their values and macca was kicking your bum on all tracks other than HD ;-p. Along with all that the paint became a cocktail with only one logical outcome. Bye bye 993...

Truth be told if be changing out one of my Porsche fleet regularly if I lived in NZ so I understand entirely. If you look at my signAture those cars plus 993 I own now were all bought and sold between 2000 when I owned my first Porsche and 2006 when I left NZ so 1.5 a year. Of course with prices today flipping is less accessible and choices fewer.

Agree with Steve on 996

I've thought about this in the past as well... There are a few manufacturers in the states that make an entire roof clip which would be a fairly easy option to put a lid on a cab.

Obviously, a steel donor would be nicer, but not always easy to find a complete roof in NZ..
