Hi, been following this thread a while, any of you know of a 993 manual for sale? Been looking for a looong time. No cabrios/targas. Am in Sth Is. so not so easy to inspect. Have almost given up & started to look at a couple 996's. But same geographical issue - Auck is a long way from Kaikoura. Have previously had a '93 928GTS.
Cheers - David

One lives across the road from me in Auckland. NZ new Manual. A couple of weeks ago the owner had a thought of selling but has since confirmed he can't do it ie he's keeping it. If he did sell I don't think it would be cheap. Certainly not less than $70,000. More choice in 964s.

David. Welcome on board. You've been looking a long while and I understand the frustration. Its worth hanging out for a 993 over a 996 IMHO. There have been very few manual cars to sell in the last 12 months. I know of only three. One of them was the adventura green car we both spoke of at length. It was very cheap although I have no doubt there was a fair amount to spend on deferred maintenance on that car. Its always better to pay more for a cherished example IMHO as these cars are old and will eat the $$$ up if they need a tickle to get them into shape. Bob on this board bought one of the other 993 manuals I know that have sold in the local market place. I believe that one may never have been advertised which is often the case with the better examples. I know from experience over the years that there are certain cars that people know are good ones and as soon as the owner makes reference to possibly selling offers are pending. You have to be in the right place at the right time and have the money at hand.

I can give you only a couple of clues today. First one is is you would consider a 964 then you simply MUST consider Matts on this board. Ive not seen the car but many others here have and say its a great example. For around 40k its very fair buying. The other car which isnt yet on the market is a black over red low miles single owner NZ new, low mileage 993 C4 (varioram) in manual. You need to talk with Tony Elsemore at CCS about that car. If it hasnt already been sold I would say its one of the better 993s available in NZ full stop. It wont be cheap (maybe 70-80k) but heres the thing, theres no free lunches in Porsche world with cars this vintage. A spotless perfect 993 at 80k NZ new with low miles etc is so much better buying than a ropey one at 50K. 30K can dissapear very quick especially if a top end rebuild is in the near future....

Hope that helps.

I'll second Matt's 964 - it has had money spent in all the right areas and is a great car at very fair price.

And for a bigger budget, even though you said no targas, Bob Magowan's aventura green manual targa is probably one of the finest I've seen. Really stunning from head to toe.

As a big fan of aircooled Porsches I couldnt spend 70K on a 993 Carrera when more than likely I could pick up the blue 996.1 GT3 on TM for the same money.

The one I'm referring to is a normal coupe. I recall an accident damaged 993 Targa being repaired at Jon Pottinger's shop in the early 2000s. It has an accident somewhere in the Kapiti area.

this debate is even more stark when you think this money gets you a good early 70s T or E - a really good one is more now

I agree but think a lot depends on what you will use it for. For me a GT3 would be a lot more suitable than the 993 C2 but not necessarily for anyone who may not want to do any track work.

The Adventura green one is Bobs.

Im pretty sure the blue one that Nik refers to was NZ new Iris Blue 1997/8 with classic grey leather & is the only other 6 speed 993 Targa I know of in NZ. I almost bought it from Giltraps in 2000. It had around 56k km on it the and was deemed (high mileage). I bought my coupe instead ($121,0000!). Its probably very high mileage by now I guess.

GT38088. I agree the 996.1 GT3s are amazing value and thats what Ive beens saying here repeatedly. If I was looking at a 911 right now and had 70K and with the type of driving I enjoy I would buy one without doubt. The 993 and now the 964 are holding or appreciating globally because of scarcity of good ones...just market dynamics (worse when you look at RS variants if same..)
