Not useless at all, very interesting for a turbo watcher!

The 930s seem to be on the way up and I would say, from recent monitoring, the only other turbo to increase it's value in the past 12-24 months has been the precious 3.6if it even comes up for sale in NZ! Even the 997 GT2 RS has come back in price.

So you're left with a 3.6or a 930 of the turbos going up in value with maybe a 964 3.3 Turbo rising as well but not to the same extent.

To your other point, yes it seems the 964 seems to be in a sweet-spot now although a sorted C2 coupe in manual will command a premium it's still a good buy.

All of this talk is making me remember the midnight blue X88 option 3.6 that was at Archibalds in the late 90s. I want that car!

Interesting - I have the door sales card from when the PO bought the C4 I have now. It was for sale for $65k in 2003 - 78,000km at that time.

Close to my "lotto" car also - there was a Red 3.6 with X88 that I used to see around Akl from time to time. May also have been on TM a few years back - around $125k if I recall. One day!

There are 11 Turbo 3.6s in NZ (1 exported to Australia). On a per population basis you probably have better odds of buying one in NZ than anywhere else. Must be time a few were coughed up, as they seem to come up in pairs.

I still miss my old T 3.6. Awesome car. Still have to say the 993TT is a better all rounder, even if it's not as rare.

I can talk both books now I have two different generation Turbos.

With mine, beauty, build quality and sense of occasion (e.g. that leather smell) go to the Turbo 3.6. A great car, enhanced by the fact that it's rare and seemingly ever more desirable.

On the other hand the 996 Turbo is a modern driving machine with incredible usability, but average looks and some obvious cost cutting in the interior.

The Turbo 3.6 is the weekend car and the 996 Turbo is the better car for the average daily driver (me). Time will tell if I have both in the garage for any length of time. I hope I do but it's not as clear cut as I used to think. Porsche have improved the breed with each iteration, although not in some of the areas we old car enthusiasts hold dear.

I totally agree with what you are saying John. I love that leather smell and love the smell of the heater even more.
When I bought my car I also test drove a 996 Turbo. Friggin fast as a bullet for sure. They handle like a go cart as well. Just an amazing car. It's really hard to understand why they have pooped themselves price wise. I admit they are not the Porsche look I like, but they are still a beautiful looking car.
You have done what I would love to do, and that's have both, but I think if I ever do choose to own two at once, I would be going even older school. Like an old T or E.
The 996 in every shape is just so cheap now. If you are ever in Tauranga make sure you call in. I can talk Porsche all day long.

You've moved? My brother is in Pahoia so Tauranga is not that much further. Although first step is to get back in the country on a permanent basis, then the road trips can start. Would not want to go head to head with Macca on Porsche knowledge....

Thanks for that Macca - just been down to see them and picked up an MXS 3.6 which they recommend as ideal for our use. I see that those guys are also distributors for Odyssey batteries so useful to know and just down the road in Albany.

Heading off to Germany next week so will be good to get this hooked up and have piece of mind she'll start on the return.

No Dramas. CTEK make great gear. Solid state electronics. The 3.6 is perfect for your use. The models with the cold setting (snowflake icon) can be used with AGM batteries which typically need a 14.8v charge to get them going. The Odyssey cells are very good. I got mine from them. It was around $400. Thats $150 more than a quality lead acid but a saving of 8kg and an ability to hold charge well with very good CCA rating. The rennline bracket isnt too pricey if any of the racers on this board decide to go this way. Easy to assemble. I bought the cut off switch for storing the car. Allows it to be stored indefinitely....

Yeh, and glad about it too. Sold my old shop (now closed, go figure) and bought Eastern Hi Fi in Tga. Love the place, the lifestyle and the fact if I drive my TT to work someone will always pull up in a nice car and wants to talk about them.

In Whakatane it would have been coined and had grease from KFC all over the bonet.

Make sure you do make yourself known if you are ever down this way. It'd be great to meet you. I thought you were back in NZ again?

TARGA TOUR ROTORUA

Ok - just competed in my first Targa event (well I should say completed my first Targa event), I signed up for the Main Targa Tour in October last year, but the alternator went while driving to the first special stage.............

Even though only 2 days - It's quite a major undertaking, 3,500 kms, 2 days of hardcore driving and 2 days either side for prep and unwinding.............

Mixed emotions, amazing driving experience - learning to keep your foot hard on the gas through blind corners at 150kph on a road you have never driven that is semi-damp is quite an education.......going 180kph over a bump and getting the car slightly airborne gives an adrenalin rush (read f*cken scare) not easy to repeat.........it's like nothing I've done with a car before.

It's very hard on a car. My front bumper has several new chips and my windscreen has 100's of minor chips. Many cars broke. Luckily the Old Girl ran like a dream. By the end of day 2 I was comfortably keeping up with the 400-600hp cars in front and could have probably gone quicker...........

Like I said – mixed emotions – amazing experience if you push your abilities and comfort zone.

Great stuff Paul. Congrats on completing the event (on one piece). It sounds like the 5 day event will be almost superhuman test off man and machine. I better start fitness training now!

Did you use the Monit? How did your navigator go overall? Getting between stages ok? What preparation on man and machine do you recommend? I know Sean has booked the October event so there's at least two of us on here that would benefit from you knowledge....
