I have to agree with this. Low mileage cars, especially XAA cars or GT cars, on sites like BAT back up to MSRP is definitely possible, especially after the last couple Carrera that sold this week. But for average 996 sales? No way! I bought my car about 10 days ago and it would have to about triple in value to return to MSRP! That would be absolutely insane even in the crazy 996 market, and I would describe my car as nice driver with highly desirably options and a rebuilt engine with nickies.

You guys all make good points and I agree with them.

Excess money and new money both drive up prices and that's definitely happening.

The car shortage is DEFINITELY driving up prices, whether it's a cool Porsche or just a regular mini-van. I grew up in the auto industry (former tech but a lifer in the industry as all my family is in it) and they are buying any cars at full retail and just marking them up to make money.

As I've said in other spots on this forum I belong to a collectibles market and we see exactly the same things happening there as I'm seeing in Porsches. Prices climb eventually over time, but they see-saw up and down on the way up just like in any market. These are normal market dynamics.

And you DON'T WANT a market to rise too quickly. That's almost instant death for a market as it collapses on itself. You want a slow, steady rise. In that regard, Porsches seem to be rising fairly quickly now but not exponentially like a lot of markets have seen in the last 2 years.

And the saying usually goes in my circles "buy what you like" because even if the investment doesn't pan out, you got enjoyment from it which is the most important part.

Never say never ......I used to drive a crazy fast Turbo car as a daily driver for a couple decades and felt the same way. But after a couple of decades, a little thing like "lag" can get the best of you..

It's like one of those little things your wife will do that can become increasingly annoying, ( like squeezing the toothpaste in the middle) . The slightest amount of lag can destroy your affection for boost, and there is always a slight amount of lag....

I can't help it; I'm addicted to boost.

It's something to watch for. When a larger group comes to market, funny things happen with prices.

Let me also say that I am not a proponent of buying cars as an investment. If they go up in price, great. But they cost money to keep running. IMHO, cars should be bought for enjoyment.
You're talking about fractional ownership splitting the cost of an item into shares? Yep.

It's happening in every collectible but I haven't heard it happening to cars yet. One of the reasons is that anyone who wants to own a car won't want to own part of it. They're going to want to drive it.

But for fanboys who never will be able to own a certain collectible, owning a share of one gives them bragging rights. This sort of investing is actually driving up prices as well, because these companies bid on items to win at full retail, then they split ownership into shares and people will overpay for a share when they wouldn't necessarily overpay for the item outright.

So the action of these buyers bidding on public auctions drives up the market and then the value of the items also increase when they value the item at the new fractional share value...and if / when they sell the shares at the new value, that new sale price (usually a record price) sets a new benchmark. I've seen it happen.

It may happen to some of the biggest cars as it's already happened to some of the biggest collectibles in the hobby.

The Black On Magenta stamp, the world's most expensive stamp was just bought at auction and is now being fractioned out to investors. Serous money involved on some of these transactions so it's not unheard of to see a 5 or 7 figure car do this one day.

Prices may be drifting up but I'm driving my 99 almost every day. Had 27.5K miles 13 months ago, 31.8K today, orig IMSB. Fun fun fun!

4300 miles in over a year isn’t a heck of a lot

Invest in fractional shares of cars &c. They advertised to me a few years back, I didn't bite. Maybe I should have.

True, I noticed one of these 996 Mezger twin turbos is actually lagging slightly behind as they cross LeMans' finish (1st & 2nd)...

Those headlights are so cool. Porsche should have continued evolving the 911 around them instead of being wusses.

Porsche did. The CGT and 918 headlights are very clearly evolutionary of 996

And both are now worth millions

So will 996

Wait for it

The only 996 that has a chance of getting near a million bucks is a museum-spec GT3 RS, and by the time that happens, that too, will have been a horrible "investment".

996 GT1 has been trading in the millions now for over a decade ($6M+ at last Gooding auction)

Others to follow

Many (mostly the ones with the GT1 Mezgers)

If you want to be that pedantic about it, those are rebodied 993/962s and don't count. Nobody thinks "996' and skips right to a picture of a GT1.

edit: not to imply that you are a nobody, but it is only you who is doing this.

I don't know about a million bucks, but I would certainly be very appreciative if the market prices go to sticker price some time in the next 5 -10 years. But still wouldn't sell. What car could you buy if you sold that would ever give you the same amount of driving experience, sound, and adrenaline rush for less of a price? A Honda? Toyota? GM?

The answer is none.
