Maybe it has the cup clutch, they work like an on/off switch. Don't remember that though, I had no issues when I drove it last year.

Default 996 Turbo Hampton Downs Lap Times, updated

John, you're sure you don't want to give the Turbo a parting blast at HD? Sense says don't blow any fittings just now but have updated the below in the hopes of tempting you onto this list anyway:

Lap times list for various 996T set ups and drivers at Hampton:

1.10.6 = 996T ~550HP Motorsport Services racecar on slicks, pro driver-
[Slicks, ECU tune, Exhaust, turbos?, ICs, aero, suspension, weight-stripped etc - lap 199 of the 2011 Racetech 6 hour] - Andre Heimgartner

1.12.2 = 996T ~550 HP Motorsport Services racecar on slicks -
[Slicks, ECU tune, Exhaust, turbos?, aero, suspension, stripped etc - lap 234 of the 2011 12 hour] - Denis Roderick/David Glasson/Aaron Harris

1.13.3 = 996T tiptronic, ~520HP?, stock bar 997 brakes and rotors, RS19/29 Pagid Yellows, race brake fluid, 3 piece wheels and soft r-comps [Hankook Ventus TD Z221s, soft fronts, medium rears]
Chris_B

1.16.95 = 996T tiptronic, ~500HP?, stock (only stock driver's seat in + spare out), RS19/29 Pagid Yellows, rotors, SRF fluid and medium r-comps [Nitto NT-01s, 100TW]
996TNZ (Walter)

1.17.85 = 996T tiptronic 420HP, stock on R-comp tyres -
[Dunlop Direzza 03G R-comps, rotors, Pagid yellow pads, brake fluid] - Chris_B

1.18.56 = 996T tiptronic 420HP, stock on street tyres, endurance pads -
[Sumitomo HTRZIII street tyres (300 wear rating), Pagid yellow pads, Motul RBF600 fluid, fully loaded bar passenger seat removed) - 996TNZ (Walter)

Andre was (is?) claimed to hold the Porsche lap record for Hampton, though I suspect that he may have set that in the 997 RSR that caught fire 8 minutes out from winning the following year’s 12-hour endurance.

FWIW, some 'independent' back to back testing on a 2WD 996 Turbo (with nice wide 265 fronts though) suggests the TD Z221s should be worth between 1 and 1.5s over the Nittos at a shorter track like HD, which lines up with other track reports. Interesting to see how they do the comparo, but no mention whether soft or medium TDs:

Congrats again to Chris for breathing down the necks of the race machines!

The Quinn's 997 RSR does 1:05.472, so a long way to go from that MS prepped 996T!

Traffic was manic so we gave up before I had a chance to take the wheel. I think the stalling was the clutch, not helped by action feeling 'gravelly' whereas the gearbox was just unknown. Idle was fine. I think the buyer got a good buy. I just can't face another year of renovation.

Yep, there's always a bigger dog. The RSR is in a class of its own really, rather than having ever been road legal. As mentioned, I suspect Andre's fastest Porsche lap claim was probably set in the RSR he almost won the Enduro in, the year after he drove the MS 996T. Of course, he may since have withdrawn that claim if someone's gone under in the meantime, which is likely. Maybe Tony Quinn would be kind enough to pedal a 996T around to make the list?

Strange...

Hard to say without seeing the maintenance bill a year out. It's hopefully not a bad deal at that price, but I wouldn't rush to call it a good one.

Well, it's still based on a road chassis... not like we're talking about bespoke CF tubs! Certainly in a different class though. I couldn't find times for Heimgartner in my quick look, only a time for the same car when it was campaigned earlier. That's, what, 3s quicker than a 997 Cup for 2-3x the purchase price? Diminishing returns...

It seams cheap at face value - but we all know it would need a lazy $30K across it to get it sorted..........

It had engine work at 95,000km, series 2 six pot calipers and a special diff. Simon was quite excited by the updates Jon P said had been done to it.

Agreed!

Wasn't Nigel doing 1.13.8s in a bog standard ex Robert Ho 360 bhp 996.1 GT3? or did I hear that wrong....

The 996TT is doing well in street trim to hit 1.13.3 like Chris B did even it its has oversized brakes, track pads/fluid and a 100 bhp upgrade. However I dont find those race car 996TT times particularly impressive in light of Chris time personally.

Im fairly sure if Neil is punting a 100% stock 997.2 GT3 around HD in 1.13.4 then a more experienced driver could go 1.12.3 in that car and with a couple of choice mods (look on the 997 GT3 boards - the US track junkies have a raft of improvements and camber settings/geo etc) could easily go 1.11 surely...

6 pots were on it when I looked at it in Sing. Gearbox had been rebuilt then with new ratios and LWFC. Diff may have been GT unit. Jon rubbed his hands on that one. Invoiced plenty sorting it out back in 2005. For 52K it was a great buy for a track car but a poor buy as a collectors car. Go car or show car is the question...
