I had a quick trip to Europacific this morning for a WOF -- love those back roads. Snuck a quick glimpse at Sean's car while I was there and someone was beavering away at it. So don't worry, Sean, progress is being made! No doubt it will be stunning when done.

I've been thinking about a dedicated track car recently and one of my mates is dead keen, so it looks like we might be going halves. The idea is to get something cheap and cheerful, put it on a diet, stiffen it up a bit, then have a bit of fun at track days. We won't be take it too seriously, but it should be a good way to improve mechanical skills and driving skills. We're considering an early 944, so if anyone knows of a reasonable one (mechanically) for sale...?

Macca and Sean,

I mentioned the possibility of the Tour in 2013 to a good friend, his response was as follows, "I did it and repainted the 355 as well as undertrays. *Plus we were pedalling at 83% of eventual winner and as much as I like to go fast in hindsight not overly smart given the state of the roads and numerous hazards (one pace not read if you miss the bridge you will not survive!) Or you could drive at the back like a nana in which case might as well put the money to a circumnavigation of the south island. Much more enjoyable".

This friend is entering a 944 in the Bridgestone series so is no nana and I take his advice seriously. The Tour may not be a good idea if you value a pristine car.
Thanks for the heads up. Steve had said the same to me late last week and we will be doing some prep on the car, mainly set up but little things like skid plates and mud flaps will be made for it given it's long term Targa life plan.

However, it's not mint like Maccas. I'm sure Dean can sort you out though Macca.

Hey Obsessed. Glad you got to check her out, can't wait until she's done. I'll get a project thread together when she's all done and Steve's blessed it.

Did you ask Steve? He seems to have quite a few customers with 944s?

Thanks Sean.

Im all ready to go LOL!
Had the brake fluid changed, engine oil, filters etc.
Ordered a set of new rear tyres from Japan (Bridgestone NZ still do not range this RE11 in 265 section!).
My insurance company have oked the Tour (but Id say you would be hard pressed to make a successful claim given the fine print - speed, side of the road etc)
I have the T100 Monit on the way. Dean will fit it in August.
I decided to go with the TrackIT iPhone App instead of the hardwired version.

Only thing left is to buy some extra underpants with a sprinkling of some "nad growth" formula, pony up the 3000 shekels entry, organize some accommodation, book flights and hope like hell I can
a). Finish the event and
b) bring the car back in one piece! I think you'll find me in the back 1/3rd of the group LOL!

The spec is below incase its of interest or Im missing something that may be of interest? 100 group changes 400 component changes. Its all new gear and part of the project with around 1000-5000 road development km on the components depending when they were fitted.

The car was already better than the driver when it was stock. So you can imagine how inadequate the driver feels now LOL!
Admittedly living in a country with almost no bitumen roads, driving auto 4X4 trucks LHD daily does NOTHING for practicing. A NZ motorway seems like an autobahn! Did I say the roads are crap here...

Here's one. http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/spec...-447689367.htm
Much cheaper to buy one all done. Been there, done that.

Would like to know John, if the name of the 944 guy that will do Bridgestone is Tony?

I think that's the one that sitting at Europacific, right? I've heard it's in pretty rough shape throughout. It's certainly been for sale for a long time!

Steve was away when I was at EP yesterday, so I didn't get a chance, but I definitely will.

Thanks for the advice Craig. I did see that one and it would be good, but the LHD is a disadvantage. We're hoping to keep the car road legal as well -- I'm assuming that one wouldn't be.

Andrew. Too true. ;-)

Attached (in very low resolution format) for those with an interest.

cbnz. You are indeed correct. The cheapest and most fun would be had in a purpose built targa car for under 30k. If I lived in NZ that's what I would do. However I need to be able to get off a airplane on a Monday, into a car on a Wednesday and know (within reason) it will last the 5 day 1000km distance. I have one p-car space, no spare space and very limited time. Its also handy that although I do less than 3000km a year in the car that I've had 12 years experience driving it as a fresh car may require a larger learning curve than Im already going to have to manage....

If I were doing the Targa Tour with more time and funds Id sell the M5, buy a BMW 1M lightly used, 6 month old from UK, have an aftermarket (and lighter) exhaust fitted, the eprom re programmed for 415 bhp and 453 lbft (1250 nzd), coli-overs imported and fitted with lighter rims and stickier rubber, run it in the Targa Tour 5 days and use it as a street machine for daily hauling after. That's a 90-100k investment however...

Im happy to be talked out of it if someone has a perfectly bullet proof Porsche they wish to share for the event :-)

That looks a long way from being all done! Good price though.

Andrew. Yes that's a great way to go for a good Targa/road 911 combo. I've owned a 996.1 GT3 and they are great cars. I have no doubt however that a 65-80k nzd 12 year old GT3 will still need some TLC to ensure it can run the full distance pushed reasonably hard. The minimum I would expect is to have to do the tyres/discs and pads with fluid and a full oil change/service and a potential clutch change. As I previously mentioned its a 12k investment to go on the tour for 5 days for the two of us and Id like to complete all 5 days to maximise my enjoyment and get my monies worth. Of course getting the current car bent wouldnt be a result either so I have been weighing up all options and suggestions and I have a little while I guess to decide what to drive...

Default Targa

Hi Macca,
Ash here. I was just thinking, why not use the M5 for the Targa Tour?. It's got more than enough power due to the fact that speed is limited and it's a case of follow the leader in convoy, rather than spread out a one minute intervals like the main competition cars. Don't forget you'll be traveling with everything from new Lambo's to old Triumphs so I don't doubt for minute that you'll have an absolute ball without the risk of damaging the 993.
Then if you like the event and get more of a feel for what's involved then consider the Porka next time round.

Hi Ash. Another good idea that I will throw in the mix. Paul suggested same. Seems a shame not to use the 993 however. If it were the 2 days event Id strongly consider the M5, but although its robust I doubt it would take 5 days punishment in its current fettle (would need tires at the very least and possible some pads). I guess I have to make a decision at some stage.....Mmmmm

Craig, no his name is Simon. He already has the 944 but blew up the motor and won't be ready to race until April.
