Yes, I have. 2002 NZ 986 Boxster. Same block and IMS. Tracked it and got it up to 98km before selling it and buying a 987 Boxster S. This still has the IMS but has the large steel IMS bearing which is good.
A good PPI and upgrading the IMS if not already done (I think allow $2k) and it would be fine. After talking about my 1st car with a few very experienced Porsche technicians it seems that they tend to fail within the first 30k if they are going to. A low mileage, one lady owner, commuter would possibly be the worst choice. Driven hard, they seem to last well. The percentage failures in NZ are low.... You can tell by the number of cars offered for sale on TM with broken engines. How many have you seen?There are one hell of a lot of them on the road though.
I think the best advice if considering one is to talk to several porsche technicians who have been around for a few years and have seen it all. Internet forums tend to over emphasise the problems IMO and they seem to have higher levels of failure in the USA. All just my opinion of course :-)
Gotta say im considering the black 996 C2 without the GT3 kit or an older Cayman as a hack car for daily duties/dirtier weekend runs. Apparently the pre 2005 cars are better for the IMS upgrade? Macca you were saying the gearboxs are sealed units from Japan? As a whole are non Turbo/GT3 996's accidents waiting to happen, or with the ims upgrade ok? Has anyone on here owned one?

Macca you do know that nowadays only the oldies hang out in FB? The young are leaving in droves because that's where there parents/grandparents are and frankly FB is not cool. Snapchat etc are more popular

First time at CCS for awhile. Service parking is absolutely manic. Notably later cars. Only RSG car I saw was Matt's GT3.
Had a chat to Dean about car prices. A sign of the times, the sales guy was more interested in my intentions with the Turbo 3.6 than the 996TT. Maybe I've got this the wrong way around, sell the garage queen and keep the DD?

The 996TT looks have grown on me and I was amused to see a group of teenagers wander past the Turbo 3.6 to look in the 996TT windows but to me I still hanker after the 964 shape and I can't shake that. If I wasn't afflicted, then I could easily own a 996TT as my only car and do occasional track work in it.
Unlike some other sellers, I don't wear my pads and tyres down to the end of their life then sell. All have plenty of life left. Michelin N rated tyres, plus a spare rear. C4S front spoiler. Just serviced. A year to run on WOF and Rego. If it doesn't sell I won't be heartbroken. Aside from Insurance I have nothing scheduled to spend in the next year.

Maybe you should just sell Herman - give it until February and the car will have speculatively increased in value to the point you will get all your money back (and maybe a small profit)

So JMc - when does the bank start getting nervous about the effect of free falling oil prices? Some things must start collapsing soon?

Haven't heard any concerns over oil prices. Commodity prices like Milk Solids are a concern, although the Bank economists take the stance that there is enough fat in wallets to take businesses through to 2016.
It's public info that banks are at a cycle low in loan loss provisions. I expect Agri customers to be the first to turn for the worse. Maybe a year or two until Auckland feels the pressure. What that will do for house prices will be interesting to watch. Right now, half of Dave's street seems to be renovating so money is around.

"Deflation". Now there's a word you may hear more of in 2015. I agree with Johns synopsis. My read is its going to get uglier before it gets prettier. My take on this is to revert to cash (preferably USD at this present time) before the asset classes and interest rates sort themselves out. Everything is a cycle including oil. The oil construct probably has a little more time to shake itself out but there is no doubt in my mind if you are in for the medium term companies like BHP which pay a strong dividend are getting close to over sold now. You could pick up 20% here in the next 18 months plus 4.8% pa divi and if using the BHP:US equity likely another 6-10% on the FX. It would be my play in this market as iron & oil are at 5+ year lows. Timing in is important but the window is opening around now. Ive been doing this for a living for a few years as a very select few of you know so I proclaim definitely NOT to be an expert LOL!
