I got offered full price for my car last night. Payment must be into a paypal account and the buyer sent me his personal email. TM send me a scam alert a few hours before the buyers email arrived telling me a fraudster was viewing my listing and may be in contact. Why the heck dont they just delete his account? TM are hopeless.

It will be Phil. This morning was Herman's turn to come work. It turned out to be a heavy commute, which would be far more comfortable in the 996TT. However I need space. In Autumn next year I want to drop the engine and gear box on Herman and I want space.

I have three accounts. Two of them suspended (one with 400 positive trades the other with 86). Because they will bot allow offshore registered users to apparently have an account I get caught out from time to time and have to start a new account. Ive spent the last week in emails with them trying to reinstate my old accounts as I see others registered from Australia and Uk now on the site. They have agreed after much debate to re instate my old accounts with limited privileges. These limited privileges mean I cant buy or sell. What the frig is the point? Im trying to be legit and they wont help. Between three accounts over 600 trades 100% feedback. I told them its easier for me to use ebay!

Pel - Macca beat me to it but I was going to suggest John's 996T to you too. I test drove a 996 C2 which had some engine issue (we dropped in at Contis during the test drive!) and decided to go with a Mezger engined one (Turbo, GT2, GT3) instead. No regrets.

To answer your original question, I remembered the non-Mezger 996 IMS failure rate being 5-10 per cent. Checking on it again just now I found this from Vargas:

"I received a formal response from one of the administrators in the class action lawsuit on the IMSB:

"Based on the information provided to us by Porsche in discovery, the failure rate of vehicles with our version of the IMS, from 2001 to 2005, was in the range of 4 to 10%. Porsche began using that particular version of the IMS that was subject to the higher failure rate as part of its production runs exclusively as of May 4, 2001. This same IMS model was used through February 21, 2005. The failure rate of the IMS in Porsche vehicles pre-dating May 2001 and post-dating February 2005 was documented at less than 1%. The higher failure rate between May 4, 2001 and February 21, 2005 is the reason why some vehicles are included and others are not."

So there you have it... "

Any bearing can fail of course and even in the Mezgers the IMS one could occasionally but since the Mezger block has an oil galley design that keeps the IMS bearing permanently oiled (derived from the 962 and GT1 endurance racers that ran big G forces for 24 hours straight), it is very rare.

I was initially chasing a low km 996 C4S as I think it's a great shape. However, I couldn't get past the possibility of an engine issue so went for a Mezger. All three cars in my garage have the same case!

To balance the discussion, the Mezger does have a potential issue with coolant pipes. An engine drop and full pining would not leave much change out of $2,000. If buying for spirited long distance driving that would be a piece of preventative maintenance I would do. I don't think many cars on the market will have that done, so I'm not discounting my sell price with respect to other 996TT on the market. I would so encourage potential buyers to get a compression test to see what wear there is with the higher mileage. At one stage I believe the car did 38,000km in one year. Those should be low wear miles as on the open road. Anyway there is plenty of choice out there. If you want low km, then don't come my way.

My memory is not accurate. The car was doing 19,000km per year on average. With the PO. The highest was 23,000km. I've averaged 7,000km per year.

Agreed. The Mezger is far from perfect. There are many documented issues and even a few total failures across the recent GT/Turbo range. The difference is most of these issues are now understood and are not terminal, or can be managed via preventative maintenance. I have to confess the 996 non GT/Turbo range would not appeal to me on the basis of known weaknesses for my usage of the vehicle. I probably rack up some of the lowest KMs on here each year on my 911s (under 5000km pa average on the 993 the last 8 years) but most of those KMs are driven with vigor on road or track. the 996 non mezger range would be a fine investment for a DD Im sure but I wouldnt have as much faith pushing the cars to heir limits repeatedly.
