FWIW, Porsche claimed that the 4S lapped the Ring faster, due to 4WD and better brakes.
I don't doubt it. The Ring is not a typical track. But the reality is that the C4S can't keep up with a 996.2 C2 on a typical track like Road America, Mid-Ohio, etc. It's much heavier and suffers from extensive under steer. On all of the factory tests, the 996.2 C2 is faster. BUT, this doesn't take away from the C4S one bit. Imho, it's a safer car all-around to drive as a daily driver. No question the C2 takes more driving skill to control it.
I prefer having the C2 to be a bit more lively and the Turbo as the hammer. I felt like the C4S was a smidge sluggish when I test drove it, but a friend bought one and had it for a few years and loved it!

I have driven all of the 996s except the GT3 RS and GT2 (someday). They all have a "drivers" feel to them which makes them so much fun to drive.
Gotta agree with you, the C2 (both generations) with a LSD are so much fun to throw around the track. Tough to describe in words. Best to be experienced.
Always wanted a turbo "hammer". Good way to describe it.

For the record, the C4S weight difference is pretty substantial, especially with the Cab or Tip options. Listed below are all the forms of C4S compared to the lightest form of 996.2/996.1 (6sp, coupe, C2):
NOTE: It is obviously not fair to compare Cab/Tip C4S against C2 coupe/6-sp weight, only doing so to give a sense of the driving feel difference against the lightest version of 996 since that is the topic of discussion.
996.2 C4S Coupe 6sp -> 3240 lbs => +281lbs vs lightest 996.2 C2, +339 lbs vs lightest 996.1 C2 996.2 C4S Coupe Tip -> 3361 lbs => +402 lbs vs lightest 996.2 C2, +460 lbs vs lightest 996.1 C2 996.2 C4S Cab 6sp -> 3411 lbs => +452 lbs vs lightest 996.2 C2, +510 lbs vs lightest 996.1 C2 996.2 C4S Cab Tip -> 3532 lbs => +573 lbs vs lightest 996.2 C2, +631 lbs vs lightest 996.1 C2

Doesn't mean anything to me. I drive my 996.2 C4S with great spirit but never exceeding 6000 RPM. She's plenty exciting with those parameters. No track. Lots of country roads though. Good tires, good suspension components.
Great car......plenty good enough for me..
It’s all relative. I enjoy the nimbleness of my 996.1, but would probably be equally happy with a C4S. Wouldn’t pay twice as much for it though.
It's just good to see that the market has recognized the all-around versatility of the C4s. Yeah, they are expensive today. Who knows near-term with an eventual recession where prices go on all models, but the genie is out of the bottle on awareness and interest in the 996. Add in all of the aftermarket solutions to prevent and solve m96 isues (LN IMS, UAOS, UIDS, etc), and we have a damn good durable and dependable car.
Over time demand will rise for all 996 variations as they become more effectively defined, with no new supply being created. Right now very few know of all the variations and attributes. They only know whats put on Yutube in large quantity and that's C4S, turbo, GT3 and the 996.1 C2. YouTube videos will broaden and so will demand for all variations.
Remember a few years ago when there were only a couple of 996 videos and they only talk about the headlights and ims?!

Crazy how far we have come.
Nice to see the 996 getting some well deserved recognition. Admittedly I was one of the 996 naysayers... and then I drove one.. and then I bought one. Now I'm happy I got one when I did.

I'm early 30's and always been in the car "scene". It's insane anyone discounted the 996, but it goes to fact with many of its predecessors. Regardless of prices, a 996 C2, C4, C4S, Targa, Turbo is everything a 911 should and will ever be. Others are starting to realize this. Not a bad deal to get in when they didn't.
I don't take my 911 to the track. I do sim racing however. And the first things I do when tuning a car is lower it, stiffen the suspension and the chassis, widen the tires, and of course upgrade the brakes. Doing all this is usually good for a few seconds even before you touch the power.
Hmmmm where have I heard that list of upgrades before.... somewhere... I've heard it somewhere once before...

Man 100%. Having walked away from 2 other 911s and driving both a 996.1 and 997.1S... the 996.2 felt just right. I was kinda in the shadow of the local car scene in my Z, everyone knew the car but rarely ever saw it because it was in my rent's garage for 9 months a year. Now that I'm back sorta, friends that really never drove a Porsche(Mostly Nissan 240, 350/70Z and Skylines) before were extremely surprised how well the car was put together. Now they're looking for a 996 but realized that ship might have sailed for them.

Same same. Agreed

I spent a bunch of seat time in a 7.1 C2S and looked at a few of them. Tt definitely felt alot more planted and apart from the looks (which I still prefer) I'm not sure I would take one over the 996.1. They feel so much lighter and more playful which is paramount in a sports car for me.

The Carrera is not traction limited. Adding weight and AWD does nothing but slow a car down and make it worse to drive.
C2 vs C4S with same brake pads & tires, the C2 will be faster on track and better to drive on the street, every single time.
Does the C4S look better? Maybe to some people. That's about all I can see as far as benefits go. With the right pads the C2 brake system is more than capable.
