Right, that's some of it. The largest impact variable, in all the Porsche variables generationally, is production numbers. 993 @ ~ 68k and 996 @ ~ 175k. It's okay...yes the 996 is a "better" car then its predecessors. Will it (996) be as rare as a 930, 964, or 993....never. With Porsche it's rarity and uniqueness; that is where the value originates. Either way, we are all lucky with what we have!
Porsches are common. They make tens of thousands of them every year. Rarity is not what makes them special.

The millionth Macan was “special”
But only 7K 996 Turbo manual coupes in existence, is indeed: ”rare”

These numbers are ridiculous when used in the same sentence as the word "rare". I have a 2007 BMW Z4MC, of which 4275 were EVER made during their 3-year production run (about half of which came to North America). Even that is a pretty big number when one starts down the "rare" rabbit hole.

What's rare is the 996.2 coupe narrow body. Less units built than the turbo and c4s. So desireable that very few are ever put it on the market for sale. Most have no idea they exist.

Whats rare is a properly maintained and serviced 996 over its life. When you find one, it's worth a huge premium and a big smile on your face.

17K 996 Turbos were made, but only 7K of them configured as manual coupe
There are actually over 200 more 996 GT's in the world than the 996 Turbo in manual coupe (all the GT's are manual coupe; so that's apples-apples)
AFWIW, there were 6K 993 Turbos made worldwide too!
Bottom line: there are more 996 GT's, and almost as many 993 Turbos, as there are 996 Turbos in manual coupe. That's why you never see them on the road
