BAT had a white 996.1 Cab's engine fail during the auction. Possible D-chunking. Good news it occurred during the auction so the prospective auction winner wouldn't have been facing a catastrophe. The bad news is that it looks to have hurt today's auction with a 996.2 Cab.
What makes this a bit crazy is that it's the second engine for the white cab, which is a low probability event any way you want to slice and dice it for a first engine failure. But to have a two with the the same car is crazy. It would be helpful to get more info on the cars history, but doubt we will.
According to the Essential Companion, D-chunking is a low probability issue with 996.1 engines due to how the factory held the engine with a clamp during the manufacturing process. It is not an issue with the 996.2 engine due to changes in the manufacturing process.
Be interesting to watch the auctions this week to see if there is a lingering effect even though this is a low probability event.
I am willing to bet the engine was replaced with a used one, since the only way to fix D chunking is with new sleeves and if it had a full rebuild with new sleeves I am sure that would have been mentioned in the ad. Also, I would be shocked if new sleeves D chunked. Furthermore, I don't know real numbers, but anecdotally I feel like D chunking and cracked heads is a more common failure on the early cars than IMSB failures or bore scoring. My 3/98 has a fully rebuilt engine with Nickies by a PO because of D chunking.
Honestly, I think there was more than just this engine failure bringing down the sale price on that .2 cab. Speed yellow is a polarizing color, and I feel like a lot of the individuals that love it want coupes rather than cabs. And with the mileage being over 100k I don't think it gets the same value boost for being a rare color. I don't think those headlight covers or the 3 other cabs and 6 other 996s listed helped anything either.

A 120K miles Cab with Alibaba headlight covers did over $30K all-in (??)

110K+ miles, Tiptronic, bad Carfax, Graphite Grey, ricer engine mods, ricer tune, no DME, aftermarket wheels, busted up carbon fiber, scratched up PCM… all not necessarily in that order

No. $37K was the headlight value. The rest was free.
And then there were FIVE! Any chance these are all the same Seal Grey car, photographed at different angles, and with different bumpers?? I am at a loss as to what's going on here
