In my opinion, very, very few 996 models are really collectable. Maybe a GT2, but even then you can probably do better rates of returns with that same cash and a competent financial investor.

It is easy to look at the purchase price and a sale price years later and start rubbing your hands together. But we fail to consider the cost of storage, insurance, operational costs, and any maintenance. Let's not forget converting those dollars after inflation.

So, as you say, drive, drive, drive a well maintained model and enjoy some fun with disposable income.

This!!! I get that some have "made" money. But if you look at the Time Value of Money, a 150$ purchase 10 years ago, sold todat for 175$ is actually a loss. Just enjoy the thing! When I bought my 996, I said from the beginning, "I'm going to drive this thing to the scrapyard one day". It is a such a pleasure to drive. It brings me joy.

Lots of 996's were made so prices still make majority available to the average car person, but then the more specific specs start to change things. The glacier white aero on black got $49k while the Biarritz white aero on savannah got $40k, with fairly similar milage.
Its means the 993 use to go for $29k to $40k and the 964s were hated so much it went to become the 996 back in its day and you could grab one for $20k and now Singer is selling them for $1M.

You could get get a speced out Aero when it was at the low end for $16k to $21k ....What changed now? BAT, Dealers driving up prices, they are still a 996 and hated on and bitched about and now they have a Aero for a prem

Looks kike BAT caught a relative making a surprise bid and the auction was pulled. Well done.

This one has a long way to go before it closes. With LSD and the rest of the options I think it should get close to $30k. Not sure the burl wood pieces will help; might even hurt.

I sold a car on BaT and the real bidding didn't happen until literally the last minute of the auction.

Sometimes, with more mundane cars, people will throw out a low bid in hopes that no one else will notice and then they win a car for cheap.

I think that's speed yellow. Pastel is lighter and more..., matte? Matte might not be the the right word, but it's not as vibrant as speed yellow like that one appears to be. Nice looking car regardless though.

It still only got $26,500, which seems low. Looks like someone got a good deal to me.

In reality the value of an “average” 996 is back to the pre Covid level.

The only thing that’s drifting up is inflation.

Two cars that sold on BAT today. Two very different outcomes. Not at all what I expected.

1999 c2 cpe 6-speed $50,996

2002 c2 cap tip w/ 31K $26,500
