It's a complex topic that you can model many different ways, but something happened to "all of a sudden" make people come out of the wood work to buy a nonessential "play toy".

Much different than needing a new or used SUV or Sedan to drive to and from work and cart the kids to soccer practice.

There will always be a percentage of guys who reach a certain age and they need a 911

996 is the last "bargain" 911 for the foreseeable future

Possibly forever

He has 176 bids and zero wins. Most of his bids are faaaaaaar from being close to winning. He's just clowning around.

Looks like he may have leased a 2020 Explorer though:

If millennials aren’t the majority of 996 buyers now, I’m sure we will be soon. Some of us actually have good jobs and don’t live in our parents basement. When I was a kid the 996 was the latest and greatest 911. I don’t think it carries the same stigma for me that it does for some older Porsche fans who were buying air cooled 911s in the 80s and 90s

i distinctly remember sitting in the back of my moms minivan and drooling as a silver 996 passed us on the highway. I was probably 12 years old. I didn’t care at all about fried egg headlamps

Every 996 I've sold in the past ten years has been to a Boomer. They're over the "IMSB" spook, and not looking to overpay for a Cars & Coffee 911 by $100K

Relisted '99 that didn't meet reserve in September 2021 at $35,996 -- even with a weird-ish ding on the Carfax. Another sign of BaT listing deterioration? Used to be that relists had to go up with no reserve.

Default US Disposable Personal Income and Govt Transfer Payments

Me as well. One final post so folks can see exactly what has happened over the pandemic with the size of the stimulus paid to Americans.

It wasn't just $1,600 of stimulus, it was over $5.5 trillion of stimulus money that was sent out to individuals and families. Below is a chart from the Federal Reserve of St. Louis (FRED) that shows US Disposable Personal Income and US Federal Govt Current Transfer Payments to persons in $Billions. US Disposable Personal Income is pretty explanatory. US Federal Govt Current Transfer Payments are payments made thru social programs such as social security, unemployment, and stimulus checks.

Notice anything unique? We had two HUGE quarterly waves of government "social program" outlays ($5.5 trillion in total) that was historically unprecedented. Obviously, when you write checks to people, it shows up in the disposable income numbers. Notice the HUGE bounce in disposable income.

This $5.5 trillion is fiscal stimulus. It does not include $4.4 trillion of new money printed by the Fed (monetary stimulus), which is sloshing around in the capital markets pushing up asset prices. Obviously, this will change as the world's central banks begin tightening.

Do you wonder why we have inflationary pressures? Or why 996 demand may have gone up? How about why Louis Vuitton has waiting lines? Too much money is chasing a currently limited supply of goods. Simple economics.

I know right. My well-off, long-retired mom & dad got every single pandemic stimulus check, probably because they don't have any traditional income. My wife & I got doodlety squat.

Bingo. Every generation has their own state of the art example to drool upon. For some Gen X folks, it’s the mid 80’s cars. Supra, 930 turbo, lots to pick from. For some boomers, the late 60’s and early 70’s. Cars their parents had or they had when they were young and traded away when they decided to get married and have kids.

Which stands to reason, a 12-yr old today is going to be drooling over the current 911s. The 992s, however big and heavy they might be compared to a 996, are the current pinnacle of the 911 in many ways, and still beat the snot out of other cool cars in terms of pure driving pleasure and quality. Camaro 1LE, BMW M3, Shelby Mustang, any Hellcat-engines car. They are all great examples, but the 992 is better than all of these, IMO. Especially when we compare at the top end (GT2s and GT3s).

The only problem with that logic is the current 911's aren't really 911's; they're a weird sort of Panamera-Coupe; in an Apple Car-Play sort of way

I can't go back in time to 12, but I know myself and I would not be at all attracted to a Panamera Coupe, or Apple Car-Play
