Yes indeed I am also on VASK, and many other forums! My Golf GTI isn't getting driven much these days because it's hard not to take the 993 when it sits right next to it, I'm sure the Golf will be out more in the winter though when it's raining pretty much every day.

As for Cape Reinga I'm afraid I will miss that too! The honeymoon is taking up most of March but I'm sure it won't be too much of a pain to endure.

The throttle response on the car is definitely very good. Even my fiance has given the car her tick of approval, which is rare indeed (although she is not super impressed by the luggage space, I would have thought after the Elise anything would look amazing!).

Looks like we have four for the Cape Reinga run.

Question to those who've done these remote runs before, do we need to take a locator beacon in case mobile phone coverage isn't there i.e. Safety in numbers isn't actually there if we get into trouble?

There's no coverage for the top part of the run (telecom map attached). In the South Island we will have no coverage over long lengths of the runs so we might have to just get used to it :-P

I always carry a tow rope and first aid kit. Hopefully your 420 horses would be able to tow me if I break down :-) If we took beers and were really stuffed then we could just commiserate together while someone completes the run and calls for a transporter or whatever.

I wonder who actually carries a spare wheel, do you? My 986 had one but my 987 just has a kit with compressor which I feel is far less reliable. So, we'd be stuffed with a suspension/steering/total brakes failure but engine probs or flat tyre might be ok.

There's some traffic on all of these routes too if that's any help.

Here's an option to keep in touch. $300 for 2 weeks, $450 for a month. http://www.radiowaves.co.nz/satellite-phones.html

I see hire is $5 per day. I wouldn't set it off for a breakdown, it's for an injury incident. I'll hire one. As for a spare tyre, no I don't carry one. Are you running 17" or 18" wheels?

Had to use those in the Pacific. Not a fan. A locator beacon is good enough insurance.

17 " C4 wheels would work on a boxster, 996 Turbo wheels wouldn't.

So should I run my 17's or 18's up north? I have my spare, pump & first aid kit - never verified myself but have read several times the spare is integral to front impact protection ... ?

Doug how are you transporting your track wheels to South Island? I have a new set of wheels arriving for dedicated track rubber (Z221) for SITT but havent yet seriously contemplated a strategy for getting them to Queenstown. Also wondering who would be carrying a race jack (yikes!).

I think transport is being worked out. We may well have to courier some parts to Queenstown as taking Steve's van will cost a lot to get there. I will likely take my race jack. BTW be very careful with those jack pads you bought off me. They click in so well it's easy to leave them in. Don't ask me now I know.....
