The process has been full of stop starts. I don't think a typical rebuild would take so long but it wouldn't be a couple of weeks even if it all went as expected. I can see why independents do this type of work. I think it would be very satisfying to rebuild an engine. I may still put it on my bucket list.

Yeah. Maybe. I should have been a bit clearer. Not poking sticks but unless there is something Im missing it seems a long time to do a stock rebuild. As John says its probably due to how busy they are etc but I suspect parts pipeline is a big issue in NZ.

One thing I have noticed from my US parts supplier is that PCNA basically stock EVERYTHING in their warehouses for 3 day shipment to the Westcoast and then 5 days USPS priority to NZ. I think over the years perhaps 2 in 50 items have had to be ordered ex Germany. When you are rebuilding an engine I suspect there are many small things that crop up you wished youd ordered....and then have to wait 3 weeks for....

I had a list and was prepared to ship things in, but the risk of stuff ups or missing vital bits was too big so I let Contis go through Steve. My ducktail is a good example. I'm on my third order to get all of the bits. It's ok to do this with my time but a professional would quickly become p'd off with waiting.

I haven't tackled a flat 6 yet but without a doubt it's a brilliant process. Especially if you have the time and the kit to do it properly.

bucket list engine self build ? I'd like to but wouldn't trust myself - entirely a reflection of my ability as a mechanic - I'd have to work my way up starting with the lawn mower haha

Looks like we will have to do joint engine run-in trips. I think mines back on Monday. Engine is in car, just sorting ignition.

I'm hoping for delivery on Tuesday at latest. Apparently I will get instructions what to do re run in.

At face value it would appear to be exceptional buying given a silver tiptronic with 160,000 km sold for $23,000 a few months back. However, given a similar C4 sold at $35,000 a few weeks ago, either this seller has no idea about the market or this has a few issues. A great starting point if the core car is solid, but there's a lot of money to invest if you can't get your head around the paint an interior and that's before you look at the areas I've had to do in my car.

Ive bought a couple of cars from Trading Post in the past. They always price their cars very sharp to move them quickly. The car looks fairly honest and a quick call to CCS will determine when it lats was serviced and if there is anything specific they know about it. Trading Post were always good to let me take the cars to a specialist for a PPI so assuming it past that with a responsible report Id say this would be a great car for someone getting into a 911.

The 964 is appreciating slowly in the US & UK and yet down in the Switzerland of the Pacific the 964 seems plentiful and depreciating. NZ seems to buck the trend....

Yeah, its seems strange re NZ prices.
Manual 964's seem to be rare here, most Jap imports seem to be tipo?
Is a C4 worth less than a C2 these days?

It is strange. I've been watching cars in the US and UK lately and a manual 964 C2 is approaching the same price as a same mileage, same condition 993 C2.

I get the sense the NZ 993 market is a little over valued and the 964 market under valued when compared to those markets.

A C4 seems to be 10-15% less than comparative C2.

I would agree............

It's mainly the manual 993 market that is high. A tipo 993 is half the cost of a manual one.
