just back from Melbourne (sunday and monday nights) too same as someone else here as I was scanning the pages to catch up. Still not felling 100% but got to do some work. Have definitely withdrawn from Targa Rotorua, disappointing but for the best otherwise risk of something bad happening if concentration slips.
re Magnus someone mentioned to me that Porsche factory had invited him over to run a workshop with the design guys. That STR2 he built is just the ultimate way over usd100k I reckon. great pics and article here.

Does he actually build for others? selling some parts he uses I think.

Yip. I found the Porsche Parade Gymkhana the boxsters and caymans were the hardest to beat. It was my first time however and I found it fun. Winning the morning session and beating Clive Pilkington (PDK 997) in hindsight was the highlight. He was quite upset. I didn't realize he took it so seriously....LOL!

It will be a good shake down for your car John. its not hard on brakes or the engine - in fact its very easy on the car mechanically.

Graeme. Hes done 2 customer cars and has four more on the books. I think hes about to launch a new business selling the parts. I half expect him to turn up at the Rennsport Weekend in Sydney this month...that would be interesting...

so is the usd 100k informed guess ? with a brand new engine build I think anything like that str2 would be a bargain.

Informed guess. Probably 150k usd. I inquired about a RHD Singer figuring 200k usd and it was 400k + donor RHD 964 + shipping both ways for the spec I liked. Go's to show what I know...

yes, probably right. Think the singer guys themselves underestimated too because the initial price quoted was much lower than now
got to say tho that I am keen on the concept of a long bonnet 1000kg 280hp ish

There is a guy (camb) just around the corner from me who has a 70 911T with an ex Jon Waring SC bored to 3.2, twin plugged with MFI and EFI.

The engine has broken head stud, but was dynoed at 275 hp, would make for an exciting car when going again.

This car would be 1000kg's with your 280hp.

This rennlister has shoehorned a 997 GT3 engine into a classic longhood 911 weighing around 1000kg. Not only is it the most incredible looking car (IMHO as nice as any Singer) but it must absolutely go like stink. Looks as great from the front as behind.

Im of the opinion that instead of spending $40k usd on making a 3.2 lire engine into a wild cam ITB 300 bhp race unit for such a conversion - you are better off shoe horning a 993 Vario Ram engine with under 100k km from a wreckers into a longhood 911, but some better headers on and give it a remap. Theres your 300 bhp 1000kg car...cost is in the engineering I guess..

real long hood is preferred in my view. It seems to me that even magnus with quite extreme hot rods, different guards and different engines still usually starts out with a chassis in period.

That is the guy who owns Wevo Porsche parts car. Macca a 993 engine loses the character of an old school Porsche engine - yes you get the horse's, but not a light weight free revving engine. There are huge debates about this on old school Porsche sites. Most people want a 3.0 or 3.2 MFI engine or EFI conversion as they are hunting the character of a 2.7/3.0 RS or SC/RS engine.

Having driven an MFI engine, I can understand why - they are something special.

There is certainly something different and special about the MFI 911's. Still have fond memories of my 2.7S. Very mechanical and lovely sounding car.

I dont disagree, but we are talking hot rodding here, anything goes. Marios red long hood with 993 varioram 320 bhp engine in previous article posted by Graeme is a perfect example.

My point was that short of "building the ultimate engine" which I understand would cost big $$$ if done properly the best stock solution I see for a road/track car is to use an aircooled engine model which already exists at manageable cost. The 285 bhp varioram would seem to be be a natural pick. Im not a R gruppe oldtimer so Id be inclined to try getting a 996.2 GT3 engine into a '72 body shell for ultimate thrills but I expect the engineering required would be more than making an ultimate hotrod 3.4l MFI race engine. Purists may dissagree.

So you are looking to take the next step into a race car? That's an exciting step. I hope you are staying 911. Maybe somethiing like the 3.0C race car that was on TM?

...any Kiwi Rennlister...well yeah...I'm a London-based Kiwi (been here since 10th July '96...but who's countin') & I'm in the process of modding my '90 944 turbo. Spent 4 years collecting the parts - interrupted by a house restoration & various other things... and hopefully in the next 12 months this baby will come together.

It'll be a 2.5 litre running Wosser pistons & rods, Garrett GTX3071R turbo, Speed Force Racing big-valve N/A head, SFR intake manifold & 70 mmm tb, SFR headers & exhaust system, SFR stage 2 intercooler, Vi-Pec V88 engine management, SFR Stage fuel system & 1000cc injectors, Lindsey Racing Dry Sump system, Elephant Racing monoballs & sphericals, Leda 2-ways with custom springs, Big Blacks with a 33/5 proportioning valve, Tarrett ARBs front & back, Eibach springs (450 lb front/ 350 lb rear), 27mm T-bars, Racers Edge camber plates etc, KEP stage 1 clutch & PP, Spec L/w billet steel flywheel, Guard 50/80 LSD, Lindsey racing engine & Tranny mounts & heaps of bearings & seals!

Wheels are hollow-spoke 993 turbo twists with A048 225/45/18s & 265/35/18s.
Tim
