Agreed. If you fortify a 996TT ( new coil over suspension, firmer roll bars, new wheel bearings, cvs, uprights and control arms) you could run full Michi slicks on Motorsport rims and with no power upgrade probably get into the 14s I guess. Bump the power by 100 BHP, bigger intercooler, pin the pipes, upgrade the brakes and if you lost 100kg weight (should be possible) you can crack below 13 I reckon. Problem is you will have a 996TT that owes you north of 130k by that time and would be as quick, more reliable and cheaper just buying a 7.1 GT3 and running it with Michi slicks in the first place?

Drifting
If someone on here has faith in these Au prices they should buy that Amethist ex HK 964 on TM for 50K and export it to Au advertising it in Autorader Au whilst it is en route. If the market is real at 90K AUD there is 20K NZD profit after going through the hurdles....business idea for someone here maybe.

Personally agree that seems OTT but try finding one for less here or anywhere ?
It's all gone nuts. Not selling so don't care.

The GTR was still a similar weight to a 996 Turbo (~1350kg ish), same power (420HP) and 4WD
It had work done on suspension components, brakes and it ran full slicks.
I'll dig up the photos of the aftermath of it being crashed twice not long after we sold it.
So throwing some slicks on a 996 turbo, nice suspension and new brake pads won't see the 1:13 Mark at Hampton?
Macca, is a 997.1 GT3 happier to take slicks in stock form? Any idea on what lap times that may achieve?
I notice you excluded the 997.2 GT3, is this quicker again or something in its build that doesn't make slicks possible in stock form?
What times have been seen with 996 and 997 GT3s over the years at Hampton? (Cup cars excluded)
Apologies for the basic post, typing on my iphone with almost no 3G

My assumption are slicks are worth 2s a lap over R comps or 4s a lap over good road tyres (MPSC2) at HD (2.8km).The price they come with is alot more mechanical duress on the drive train and they are expensive to run with as they heat cycle out often before they are corded. Michilin Slicks for 18" for 996TT would likely be 2.6K fitted vs 2.2K for Z221 and they would probably give half the laps and not be road legal or insurable.
I believe youd need the HP bump to make it work. Slicks means beefing everything up and renewing stuff. Talk toChris or Walter as they have pushed teh 996TT chassis the hardest and they will tell you what can be done reliably and what cant. Once you start throwing 1500kg around the track the obvious weakness are all those 15 year old bushes and parts.
Remember the stock weight for a 996TT is over 1500kg with a few basic options.
I didnt mention 7.2 GT3 only because of the price delta. Comparing a 996TT bought for say 75K and moded with suspension, drivetrain war components, brakes, HP, intercooler, a bit of lightening etc (im thinking around 45K+ with labour to get it all set up and done right with geo wheels and slicks).120K plus 10K fudge factor puts ypou in ballpark for 7.1 GT3 cost wise and throw some slicks at that and (should be fine out of tehbox if in good fettle) and you will be putting in similar times.
Nomany in our group run "stock" anything. Neil D has a stock 7.2 GT3 with Trofeo R and on a cold winters morning in a bent sprint PCNZ comp put in a 13.35 IIRC. Neils now in Porsche Series so may beable to better that. Depends on teh driver but Iwould say hes resonably experienced and quick. Myabe a 13 flat if all the gods were looking at him. 996 Gt3 in stock would be Pauls car but hes still breaking her in. Id say 1.145-15 with Trofeo R. Id expect hell be there soon.
Remember the Hp of the GT3s is between 360-460 and never any more. The 997TT and 996TT at the track are usually 480-580 bhp and can be boosted beyond. Alost none of the cars we are comapring in the 30-40 odd RSG cars taht come to play are stripped out. All are roadies and quite a few have to do weekend family duty.

Its what Ive been saying from the get go David. Talking about values runs 100% contra to my ownership enjoyment/experience. If we start spending 80% of our time talking about the prices of our poirsches we will spend only 20% of our time driving them and later, sadly none of our time. I will have sold mine well before taht and moved on to something that becomes more about the experience than the pub talk. Im thinking Worsleys.

Get an Exige V6. Should smash those times in pretty much stock form with a decent pilot on semi slicks.
My S1 with ~190bhp at the wheels on semi-worn semi slicks has done a 1:12.9 and will lap comfortably in the 13s, and that's still with a fairly road-biased setup. More low, more aggressive geometry and fresh rubber should see a mid to low 12, and it'll take slicks to go a bit faster again. The V6 in stock form should be at least as quick, and plenty of aftermarket mods to take them to 450bhp or more would turn it into a road car pretty much nothing else on the road could touch for track performance.
