Ive been on the 911 aircooled wagon 15 years, so a little longer than you and a similar length of time as John. The other thing is you havent driven or lived with a PDK or PDK-S equipped car yet. Although I dont disagree with your comments as such I also dont believe they are fully qualified till you have lived with both. The PDK makes a much more compelling argument than I thought it would. The best world is one where you have one of both I guess. As for aircooled vs watercooled I shunned watercooled for over 10 years. I owned a 996 GT3 and thought it was sterile and ugly after my 993RS (which it was). I also thought it was "too fast for NZ roads". I just learnt to drive better now thats all LOL!
I still think the aircooled have more character and are more "fun" than the water-cooled cars generally speaking and I guess I would say the same for manual vs PDK, however its what gets you up and driving that counts and right now Im putting 3:1 kms on the new gear vs old. The new gear is accessable, reliable, low cost of running, good looking with many usful and convenient features and I have to tell you "POWER CORRUPTS" as John already knows from turbo days, theres something about being able tio nail the loud pedal and get pushed forward with a huge shove in a wail of high RPM N/A engine sound. The modern cars and PDK particularly deliver well in this regard.

Interesting times ahead....

 

Power does corrupt. For some reason, the engine I still enjoyed the most on the open road was the Turbo 3.6. It seemed like waves of torque allowed you to overtake anything and it had class. That interior was beautiful, like a timeless gentleman's club. The 996TT was likely a lot faster but didn't feel it. Herman is now loud and torquey, but not as easy to drive as either turbo. The R is a weapon, but not imbued with much character. Enough said. The Cayenne is a moving sofa. Sunday will see another 600km in the latter. Horses for courses.

 

I'm very much on the wrong end of doing well out of cars. By a factor of about 10.

 

Fun fishing trip. Got good bites from those I targeted but didn't quite land one. Ha ha.

When the old cars are long gone from the garage I reckon there will be regrets in future. Just saying.
