Not completely true, I have seen the block break/seize even without any leaking.
That is what occured with mine, the block cracked without leaking. However the failure on my 01 (40k miles) may have been self inflicted after mounting an aftermarket spoiler and not aligning it properly.

The weather has FINALLY turned cooler here in Houston so I dropped the top and went for a spin. Love this thing. First drive of Fall 2023 in Houston, TX.
Mine still works, whilst slowly seeping the Stop Leak I put in years ago.
What I did today: broke one of the silver covers to the headlight washers trying to remove it to refurbish my headlights, so ordered a couple new headlight washers (~$75 ea., annoying but cheap compared to our $2.5k+ headlight assemblies).
Doubtful. I love this car and there isn't really anything out there that I could reasonably afford that does anything better than this car can do it. It's so modded that I don't care about originality anyway.
Same here, I have been looking to buy a newer 911 for the past couple of years and even have the money all set aside but every test drive I take ends with me feeling the 996 Turbo is still more fun. I going to drive a 991.2 GT3RS soon. Maybe it will be the one to entice me.

I've driven lots of whats out there on great roads... Ferraris, Astons, Mclarens, Audi R8, 991 RS's, GT4RS, etc. Bought a few of them. Still own a few of them.
Some of my buddies think i'm crazy, but for putting a smile on your face when driving some twisty back roads, a well sorted and correctly modified 996 Turbo is damn hard to beat at any price point, and IMHO impossible to beat at it's current price point. Which is why I still own two of them.

991 Turbo is way quicker and supremely capable... but less visceral and less connected. This one probably comes in next after the 996 Turbo in the bang-for-buck category. They are undervalued, just like the 996 Turbo. But still almost 2X a 996 Turbo.
930 Turbo is an absolute hoot, but flexes to the other side of rawness and lack of refinement. Not a car you really want to pile the miles on, but what a blast for a Sunday drive in the mountains.
*ALL* the GT3 cars I've driven feel underpowered after my turbo brain calibration. Compounded by the fact i drive at 6,000-10,000' regularly. Every time I get in one i find myself wanting another 100 HP.
I've had good seat time on a 991 GT3 RS... Nice, but ALWAYS happy to get back into either my 996 or 991 Turbo.
Had a GT4 RS. Amazing car that I was always happy to get out of. It just plain gave me a headache and I missed the turbo mid-range torque. Opposite of bang-for-buck, but they hold value. And it gave me a headache.
991 GT2 RS... This is probably the car I would own if they weren't $400K, but at that price point, hard pass.

Ferraris are great (355,440, 458, 488), but I prefer driving them to owning them. Huge pain in the *** to get parts on the older models and good mechanics are even more difficult. Normally aspirated, gated, mid-engine Ferraris are pretty damn special to drive though. Front engine V12 Ferraris are a hard pass. Not what I want in a car.
R8 V10 manual. Nice car, fun, but more GT than canyon slicer. And kind of clunky. Same with Gallardo gen Lambos.
Modern Astons are a hard pass. Great engines, but boaty and disconnected feeling. Plus slushbox (torque converter) automatics which suck. And the very few manuals they make are actually worse???
Lotus Evora 400/GT are tons of fun. Great bang for the buck. Very affordable. Look great. Another 100 HP and they would be hard to resist.

OK, the Mclaren 720S spider is really something special. Best road legal car I've ever driven. Perfect blend of visceral nature, connected, super fun, but doesn't try to constantly kill you but still entices you to be a better driver. And compared to original sticker, a bargain. But still 4X the price of a nice 996 Turbo and far more expensive to insure and maintain. I'm undecided if it's a long term keeper for me,
A Ferrari 458 with a gated manual swap would be awesome. I wish Carrera GT was more mass produced and affordable. I'm not selling my 996 no matter what I may do in the future. After all the work I've done to it I just think it's really good! One thing, I wish I had done GT3 heads when my motor was apart.

That's your answer, been there, done that - see my signature, I had the 996 turbo since new for 18 years and 158,000 miles. Personally, the 991.2 GT3 RS is by far the best 911 that I have ever owned, no other one is close - even the 991.2 turbo. It kind of seems to me like what the ultimate 996 turbo would be as it's so involving, yet modern and extremely lightweight, full warranty, etc. it's just an incredible automobile and with our side muffler delete and X-Pipe, it makes the wildest sounds with absolutely no drone at any time. I just can't say enough good things about it. I have a fully modified 991.2 turbo with every bolt on running over 700 HP and I reach for the GT3 RS keys every time I want a fun drive. You just can't beat 3,100 lbs., 9,000 RPM's with titanium internals, PCCB's and rear wheel steering. What a blast! If you drive one, I predict that you will love it. Also, it's not bad at all in terms of ride quality. I took a friend (a 996 turbo enthusiast) out for a ride in it and we hit some bumpy sections of road. He remarked it handled the rough road better than his 996 and he had no idea that it would be so compliant after all he heard. I told him I agree, it's actually very surprising and comfortable to drive. So do yourself a favor and schedule a test drive :-)
I use the DSC sport controller in the TTS, with a gt3 touring calibration, it works very well, but still a little harsh over tracks and potholes.
The valving in the gt3rs is a great deal more aggressive, and admittedly, I have not driven a gt3rs with a DSC, but stock to stock versus the TTS, the gt3rs is not what I would ever consider as a daily.... Probably getting too old.
I would very much like to try a touring, that engine, but a little more civilized.
