Motor-out. Stopped by the shop, and saw everything apart.

Talbot's opinion is that (for someone with his equipment), it is just easier to do the job everything is on a bench. Total hours might be a bit higher, but as compensation one get a chance to do a more comprehensive check-out of everything, and there is a lot less cussing involved...

    It remains to be seen...

Car is bring worked on now. We shall see what the "butcher's bill" turns out to be.

In the end, I decided to deal with the inconvenience of a very remote shop, and went with Blair Talbot. Of all the folks he was the one who seemed like the straightest shooter...

    Hi John,

Don't think I ever got a pointer from you about Northern European (and for some strange reason, your query from the 25th did not show up until today (28th)).

Anyway, at this point, I've verbally committed to having Blair Talbot do the work.

Next time I check-out Northern European.

I met the owner one day - he came up to me in a parking lot and gave me his card. He was just starting out with this business, I think, about 3 years ago. He was a Porsche owner and PCA member for many years (I think).

Don't believe I ever got a name for any shop in Concord. If you know of one, I'd certainly be interested in it.

All the other places I have contacted have been over by the coast in the Portsmouth area, which is pretty far out of the way...

Man, so I guess there really is a "Porsche tax." My previous experiences with Japanese-import tuners is that they rarely have any issue with matching internet pricing on parts...

In fairness to Precision, I'm getting pretty much the same story from every shop, so it is not just them (though they are the ones whose pricing looks the most "dealer-ish").

The only concession that they made was that they claimed that they had built "a few hours" into their estimate for unforeseen difficulties, and it was thus possible that the bill would be a few hundred less. Mind you, they also stressed that in their experience there is usually something unforeseen; i.e., I got the impression that I was likely to be hit with the full estimate...

I made a follow-up query, but they have gone silent on me. So I guess they don't want the business of folks who are going to question their pricing...

It is interesting that every shop I have contacted has insisted that they now remove engine completely for this service, and online claims that this is not necessary are cases of "not doing it properly". Hourly rates have varied a bit, but the big differences have been due to the number of hours estimated to rr the engine.

Precision had one of the highest time estimates, so I'm pushing back on this number a little... It will be interesting to hear what they say.

Mind you, everyone has also be quoting me full retail on all the parts, so I think it is pretty clear that their default is try and milk their customers for all that they can...
