I recently had an unmarked State trooper pull up next to me while I was going north of 90, turn on his lights for a split second to get my attention, then lowered his driver's window and gave me a hand signal to slow it down a little. I gave him a thumbs up and we both went on our way. Porsche privilege is alive and well.
I was making my way through thick-ish traffic on Philadelphia's wonderful Surekill Distressway a few years back in a 2005 STi, which I had de-winged so that it did not attract every police officer in a 25 mile radius. I was darting through small breaks in the traffic, squirting the gas to hit openings, that kind of thing. A car that looked suspiciously like an unmarked police vehicle was marking time with me. When I exited and came to a stop a light, he was beside me, tapped the lights, rolled down his window. I did the same. "You should use your turn signal more often" he said, I agreed, and we went our ways.

Liking a 964 over a 996, that I can understand. The 993 I simply just don't get.
TBH I've never been in a 993 either, so this is all just from a numbers/aesthetics standpoint. Maybe someone else can explain it.
I've had both a 964 (1990 C4) and the 993 (1996 Carrera). My impression was the 993 was much better than the 964. The 993 had a better suspension, quicker, more power, and some of the earlier faults with the 964 were fixed or improved in the 993. The 993 also got rid of the external plastic bits that made the 964 look more like an aftermarket makeover of the outgoing Carrera.
The only reason I got out of the 993 was the GT3 (self explanatory), which I have owned now for nearly 16 years; longer than any other car I've had by a factor of four.
