the only big wild card there is the odometer failure. if it was recent, then maybe not that big of a deal. But if the odometer hasn't changed in a couple years (north carolina records this at annual inspections) then that could be a real problem. My Dad lives within 30mins of him. If I didn't think there were people banging down his door maybe I'd buy it and ship it out west...

the level of response he received has obviously given him insight into his undervaluing of the car. based on more and more details that are surfacing about condition, he may not wind up with more than mid/high 20s, but it's obviously not going to go to someone at the 'steal price' of $19,500. someone would have needed to show up at his house with $19,500 in cash and taken it right then. the longer it went, the more he understood the desirability of the car. this will now just end in a 'fair' price for both parties.
