Thanks Jason. I'll look them up. I remember noticing their sign in Wairau recently. I wonder if they have the same owners?

Nope. Broke from too much touring and Targa Tour. Saving up for Yoda to do a few mods in a month or two's time.

Thanks Graeme. I need more experience to know what to feel / look for. I've only used one set of track tyres 17" R888s last year. They lasted the year of track days before running out of tread. They still seemed good at their end of life to me, but like I say, lack of experience to be able to tell.

Infact the total cost including the Big Red brake upgrade, endless pads, new air con evaporator and the spherical jointed complete rear suspension set (which I wouldn't have bought nor the brakes if I knew in hindsight what the box and LSD were costing to sort out) is the price of a 964 Tipo! Infact the cost had blown my budget on this car for 2014 by such a magnitude I have no option but to abandon the SI Targa Tour this year which is a real shame. Ill definitely be doing the NO Targa with you guys next May tho - for certain!
Oh no!!! Wrong priorities Macca? Like you say SI Targa Tour is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Damn.

End of June? Would be a nice winter activity to check out the videos of the brilliant SI in great weather :-)

ChrisM is also selling his 18" OZ wheels from his 964 and also has a set of 17" Cup2s. I looked at the 18s last weekend. They're perfect and very nice. Would like them myself for the boxster just don't have the spare dosh at the moment.

Page 920. Apparently that is the code for the 917 chassis. So...

yep they weigh only a kg and a bit less than the normal ones but as macca says to get your RS original these are the set you need. On a 150euro RS they are nothing.

@ Doug - I declared victory on the iMac rebuild, prematurely. I have yet to successfully install Mavericks so I can use the installed version of iMovie. I doubt I can make end of June at this rate.

@ Walter - bought that book. Wow, so much to learn and practice. Realistically things like left foot braking is not something I'm going to practice at HD on a Play Day. As it is apparently a normal way of driving a Kart that cements that idea.

Yeah Doug hear you re the priorities. Something has to give. Before the SITT I committed to 7.5K of Big Brake upgrade/pads and the spherical arms for the rear of the 993, all things that were not strictly needed and if Id known the gearbox/LSD issues that surfaced from the SITT I wouldnt have spent that money and SI Targa may have been a potential reality.

Here are the before and after pictures of the Porsche LSD housing now with Guards Transmission 40/60 ramps and their 2 per side clutch pack. Theres over 10 hours of labour in this alone to dismantle, inspect, report, research and rebuild with the new hardware! The GT parts were approx. 2K NZD including the housing bolts (they are good for one use only). You can see how the bills stack up.

P.S. Next to the completed unit is an entire M220 option 22/45 Porsche OEM clutch pack and ramps. Any wear items have been replaced (ordered before I realised the unit was not what I wanted). If anyone on this board has a M220 option 993 your LSD is by now surely in need of new plates etc. The price out of the states for the replacement clutch pack alone is $1200 USD + freight/GST. If anyone wants to make me and offer on these I will move them on at a heavily discounted price (and throw the ramps in as they are no use to me). Bob and Jamie I think you may both have M220 option - if so may be worth putting these on the shelf until next time you need the engine/box dropped for some work. The labour to install is reasonable if you already have the LSD as they are an insert. Please PM if any interest or Ill throw them on ebay.

Glad it hit the spot. It's a great primer and worth a reread now and then.

Best to start practicing left foot braking when you have the road or track to yourself and are not pressing on. Think the main benefit on the street is that it more than halves reaction time for braking. On street and track it allows for quicker, more precise inputs, and smoother transitions - especially from brake to throttle - that maintain the car's balance in corners. Like you say, it also gives you good left foot brake feel for karts and single seaters.

Since getting the 928 auto over a decade ago I have been left foot braking on road and track. Felt weird at first but it almost feels strange using my right foot to brake now, though it obviously still comes into play when I occasionally drive manuals on track (still typically start with my left and transition to the right for down shifts, then back to the left for trail braking and a smidgeon of brake-throttle transition overlap when coming back on the power. Easier to just start with the right and transition once, but my left is my best braking foot so I like to use it).

Would suggest only attentive drivers consider defaulting to left-foot braking though as unthinkingly hitting the leftmost pedal in an emergency braking scenario is not a recipe for success when back in a manual.

Peter, thanks for the RSG sticker. Arrived during the storm but thanks to your thoughtful packaging it survived in perfect health. Can't say the same for the OPD 'leaflet' that arrived same day (not that I'm in the market for 991 bits or service).
Sam, many thanks for your efforts in the design dept. Look forward to the shirts being offered up, they look great and suitably understated. I found an old scuba T-shirt the other day that had the words "Seven Tenths and Rising" referring to the world's oceans. Kind of appropriate for us too!!??
