My contact Scott who does a lot of motorsport (done the N24 in a 996 cup) and lives in Invercargill says Highlands does have a metered pump selling 98 now and can just pay on card. But it is behind the security fence so you need to pre arrange pick up time so someone is there to unlock etc
So seems to me best plan is swing by there on the way down for those coming across Haast otherwise top up in Dunedin and carry a few cans 40 or 60 litres - that way top up with 95 plus Nulon is minimized for those that cant use avgas. Those that can make the choice. Then after the track day at Teretonga cruise back to queenstown on 95 and light thottle

Only other option is ship a few drums down south but that is expensive. Scott could probably organize some if you were really determined - would need to be prepaid.

What if you've installed a Steve Wong chip optimized for 98 RON?

Then John it will pink under load on 95 especially run hot on the track. No dmanage just pull back the timing.

My issue is the timing doesn't get pulled back. Im going Avgas mix for the first track and subsequent 1000km of touring between the first and second track days that Doug apparently has lined up for us! The car will run strong on Avgas so I can keep up with you seasoned track day 964 drivers!

Great stuff thanks Graeme.

The problem for many on the trip is we are without 98 from Nelson until Highlands. Thats around 2000km with touring in between. I think most of us will have to try that additive to get to Invercargil. Im not using it at Teretonga, rather use Avgas. At Highlands I suspect we will all fill up before we leave and hopefully get to Timaru next.

Its a bit silly stripping Southland of 98 outlets. Whats the world coming too!

Paul. Take note!

Looking at the past year, I was surprised at how many times I've been out on track, but also how concentrated it's been.

29/3 RSG 996TT
8/6 PCNZ Gymkhana Turbo 3.6
22/6 PCNZ Driver Training 996 TT
20/7 RSG C4
10/8 Regularity Trial C4
11/8 RSG C4
31/8 RSG C4
13/9 RSG C4
14/9 RSG C4
5/10 Classic Trials Pukekohe C4
2/11 RSG C4
3/11 Classic Trials HD C4
24/11 Playday Normal C4
14/12 RSG C4 & Turbo 3.6
11/1 RSG C4
18 & 19/1 Classic Trial C4
27/1 RSG 996TT

Considering I went on the track for a PCNZ Drivers ed in 2003 and did nothing else until the above I'm happy with progress. I certainly was relatively green for the NITT. The SITT will hopefully see me a bit faster than before. I'm not predicting great feats, but the 964s won't be road cones. In fact throw in some unseasonal wet weather and the opposite may be the case as the C4 comes into its own.

Not bad John. As I say a seasoned track veteran!

Apart from a PCNZ DE in 2003 and 2005 were we did around 20 laps each day with instructor here's my on track history:

29/3 RSG 993
13/9 RSG 993
14/9 RSG 993

Like HD, Taupo and Manfield above all the SITT are new to me. Hence I will take instruction. Thank god Im a quick learner LOL...

I emailed Racing Ray last night - told him to keep the second week of September free for the NITT. Im already looking forward to that. Something nice about going back to a track for a second time. Could be embarrassing however if one posted lower times than first time out! Id really love to get to HD in 2014 but its looking unlikely. It will be nice revisiting the SI tracks in Nov on the Targa but these are just short 10-20 lap sessions...

History tells us 2 x RSG 964 have come to grief in dry weather in the last 12 months. I wouldnt be relying on that antiquated and heavy 4WD system helping you out on Turn 1 Teretonga (after the 200kmph straight) in the wet. Quick reactions and steel ***** yes but a bit of extra power thrown to the front wheels? This is where experience driving a 911 fast in the wet will pay off (hey dont look at me!)

Just joshing with you John :-)

Just kidding. They shouldn't be playing with the suspension setup.... Just checking brake lines, oil lines etc.

All this talk of fuel problems. Maybe I'll take the Boxster. Its setup for 95RON or higher.

Matt/Dave: I assume the C2 is standard spec regarding this. Does that mean I can safely run it on 95RON?

I don't like carrying containers of fuel - dangerous. And don't want to have to mess about too much sorting fuel during the trip.

Real choppers use Jet A1.

I think worse case it is 100MON ie at a lean cruising mixture and up to 130MON in optimum conditions, full rich mixture.

John: some of you guys used to drain so much out for the morning water check you nearly had to get the machine refuelled!

I am guessing it is technically illegal to run Avgas because the tax isn't paid. Who cares? And you can't just rock up to an airport and grab it. Need to know someone. Handy being well connected Macca.

It should be fine on 95 unless Dave secretly chipped it.
