That's interesting. Shows how many styles there are. Just finished watching a vid of walter rohl driving the new GT3 where his opening line is something like - the mistake people make is not being effecient with steering inputs - you should always be smooth with the wheel he says...sounds like the differences on turn 10....

John. You need to get a camouflage cap like David so you meld into the background or some of these cup car owners are going to say they are missing a John or two?

BTW cup car owners would not lose much time so a John would have to be smaller than a Macca.

Alas, Turbo 3.6 maintenance just took the last of this years budget. Oil and brake fluid changes done and a control arm bushing job slated.
I wandered past the black '07 GT3 this morning at $115k and wondered where that and the Turbo 3.6 would be value wise in 5 years time. As attractive as a swap would be track day wise (keep up with the arms race) I'm not convinced it would be financially attractive. Time to remap the 996TT and find some ugly tyres.

Just had the same (fluid/filter change) on mine, and wandered past the GT3. Came to the same conclusion. What do you mean by "ugly tyres" though?

End of life efforts like the $50 ones that were on trademe. Just been talking to Simon G re race tyres. Seems the GT3s are the best source but many racers run old tyres for practice until they are stuffed. I'm hoping there may be older sets out there. Otherwise it runs to $2,200 for a set of Z221 mediums. Not sure I want to commit to that level as I already have a spare set of Michelins

John's 996T mapping
John, your remapped 996T will be scary fast down the straights at Hampton. So fast that your preservation instincts will probably lose you a couple of seconds a lap until you adjust. Your tyre budget will shoot up a bit. You will feel twenty years younger. It basically converts your car into a better handling 959 Sport ;-)

John. $2200 seems steep for Z221 C50s. 235/295? I paid 1860 for 235/265 and Im pretty sure Matt paid under 2K for his 235/295
I think used tyres are a red herring. The cost of fitting and balancing is not worth the performance degradation old rubber may provide. Often people take half worn R compounds off the car because they are heat cycled and no longer competitive. Its just hit and miss as others here have found. That said sometimes you get a bargain deal but generally its Caveat Emptor.
If you are seriously looking to remap the 996TT John talk to David at Torque Performance in Avondale. They can live remap it for around 2500 which is on local fuel and with your current exhaust set up. A more sensible option than just dropping a chip in if form an AM company I feel. If you add another 50 bhp/50 lbft just make sure that gearbox has fresh service and you are running track pads and good geo. The extra speed will as Walter says increase duress on other components as you know.
Geez. Is it really is becoming an arms race? I need to learn to pedal my 993 faster so I can embarrass some of you with 200 bhp more than me!
