Good, one less part to search PET for. The other bolts are in the box so good to keep them altogether for the refit. I washed the heat shields etc when you have done your magic it's just a matter of riveting and bolting it back together.

Please do share the journey. That back window is the final piece in the corrosion search and I'm confident so far that all panels are original etc so looking good.

The gearbox has been a saga. It's fair to say that I never realized how much the parts would be or in one case how hard to get. The diagnosis was 3 synchros, third gear set, slider (guide sleeve) and a full diff clutch pack. Those are close to $6,000, then there is labour and a gasket set. A C2 would be cheaper as no diff clutch to worry about, but still likely a $6,000 + job if you give the car to the mechanic and say do it.

If any lurkers are wondering how to diagnose this, just accelerate hard in second and shift to 3rd at the redline. If it graunches then you have a synchro issue, which if caught early might save you buying the gear set but you are likely still up for the guide sleeve and synchros. As graeme has said before, gearboxes are a wear item as much as engines.

Paul, always keen. Lola is ready to go.

If you are air cooled (even better if red) join us at 8am at Soljans Estate. Paul, Doug, Dave (if he gets a gate pass) confirmed

Very nice, unfortunately too many things I'd promised the family to do tomorrow so the guilts have won this time. Looking forward to seeing the car though. Interesting to see it lined up next to the SC.

Macca, I can see why you were underwhelmed by the 968.
The consensus is that the sweetspot for the 968/944 platform is at about 400 - 450 fwhp & 400 lb/ft torque. At that level they're lively enough to start challenging their traction but not into the "animal" category which some of the 16 valve 3+ litre cars in the 600+ rwhp are.
The beauty of the 944/968 is that the aftermarket support for them in the US is significant so that 400 -500 bhp can be achieved without too many bespoke parts - but of course horse power always costs.
