A timely piece by the NYT about our collective, diminishing future as drivers.

While we are talking tyres... I'll need a new set for the R as the Pzero's were on their last legs on targa tour... I've got MPSS on the RS4 and like them... But would the CUP2's be a better option? Remember I have a set of track specific wheels with tropheo R's on them, so these would be for street, B road runs and NITT and SITT... But it's not a daily driver.

Macca you've got the Cup2's don't you?

I use 19" MPSS on my RS60 and have loved them for DD and fast B road driving. They're substantially less cost than the Cup. There's quite a discussion about them on the www.rennsport.org.nz forum within the last week.

I'll easy believe that, having seen more of his car now. 'Baby Blue' slings a 310HP na 2.5L engine powering just 1040kg (similar power-to-weight as a 996T x50/Turbo S), matched with some top remote reservoir suspension, a six speed sequential, seam welded chassis, gusseted cage etc etc.

Hard case interview here, if you can fight past the accents:

Favourite Frank quote "My navigator always tells me that I am just the steering wheel attendant - that's all I am. So do what he tells me and we'll be OK"

Jake, they say bad luck runs in threes - so you should at least have a clear road ahead now.

Chris - MPSC2 are factory on the GT3. I use them for everything and they are brilliant. I have MPSS on the 993 which I use only for street and they are brilliant too. The MPSC2 are 97% of the Trofeo R on track and 90% of the MPSS on the road (all weather uses considered). The are the only tyre you will ever need on the Cayman R to do everything but as you have Trofeo are perhaps try MPSS? There is info on RSG board as Doug says under thread on MPSC1 at sale price...

Yes - I am having a total love affair with the GT3, but I have always found 993's very pretty.

Fashion seems to favour the 964 more these days, but I think the 993 is a better car...........might need to wait 10 years for fashion to come around again.

Got the geo done today and the balance is much improved, starting with stock GT3 setup with a wee bit more neg camber - the GT3 is just epic, just the best cars Porsche make.

I haven't driven the Trefeo's in anger yet, so can't really comment on the track, but what does surprise me is how quiet they are. If these things are within a sec or two of the times a 221 would offer, I would take these as they are so civil on the raod. I found 221's droned...........

Paul, take heed of the recommendations to get your coolant lines pinned if it hasn't been done already. I've had my engine dropped this week and three of mine were seeping, and one slipped out of the casing as soon as it was touched. Not the most interesting way to spend money on a car, but means I can justify owning it for a longer period of time so that it can work off the debt it now owes me!

The plus side is that it's the first time I've had a full view of the car internals, and I'm happy to find that it hasn't been afflicted with the stereotypical UK rust issues (aside from the exhaust fasteners which I'd already replaced). No matter how convinced I was on it being ok, seeing it in the flesh removes any underlying concerns I may or may not have admitted I had.

What is the pinning costing you?

Dino scared me with big numbers like about $7K?

Has Chris B pinned his?

I know Nigel and John haven't pinned theirs?

Having blown an engine, I do see the value in such preventative maintenance........I my case it distroyed the value of a now collectatable Porsche, not having it's original engine case.......

The European is always lighter and quieter than the Asian rubber I have found. I'd say 1s ish slower than C70 z221 at a guess. Like you say not worth making the compromises for. The longer I'm at this the more I value convenience over all else which is why the GT3 is the perfect tool for the type of driving-usage I enjoy. I'm sure you will find the same. The trade off is the 993 keys stay at home longer than they should!

Could be a good idea to get the easy pipes pinned at least. It's an age more than usage thing from what I understand. IIRC a few of these can be done without dropping them engine and shouldn't be expensive. Definitely worth doing before SITT as that would really wreck a hard organised and expensive trip...

Unsure if the final price, but it has been estimated at 30 hrs of labour inc engine drop. CCS quoted me 16 hrs to do the pin work and then talked me out of it. I shouldn't have listened...
