To be fair, the R and Cayenne are new acquisitions, but don't let anyone tell you that older cars are necessarily cheaper to own. You can probably also see why I'm not keen on flicking Herman on with most of that work unlikely to be reflected in a sale price. Next up is a new carpet set. Doug is proposing that as well. In for the long haul. You have to laugh at the sunk cost mentality some of us share.

John that is seriously long (the first half of the list - the mechanical stuff).

My list (excluding mods) over same time is much shorter but still $$$:

Rear half shafts with CV joints
Rear lower control arms
Pads, discs and fluids (upgrade)
Rear wheel bearings (preventative)
Front wheel bearings & cv (preventative)
Air con evaporator (turns out wasn't needed to be done)
Gearbox rebuild 234 synchro etc

I still have the following to do:

Front control arm bushes
2/3 synchro and whatever else is found when opened up

I'm also mulling over a secondary bypass by fitting a cutoff to the cup pipe. That should wake up the neighbours.

Default Any Rennlisters from New Zealand?

Thanks for posting John. Made me feel better about my current predicament. I've avoided my list for a while, I need to revisit it and add a few bits and pieces, and may post it on here if I'm feeling brave enough to share it publicly!

Thanks for the heads up on these. Wish Proshotz would run a dutch auction system instead though - ie pay through the nose now, or wait for the price to halve every 6 months. For those wanting a memento of the whole field without spending a few thousand on it, here's some (often fuzzy) video footage of the slow 'safety car' finish of SS20 Ngakuru-Waikite. Tour pack starts at 1.00, led by the Mazda 6 that took over after the built BMW 650CSI race car had cried enough. :

They're well built cars but they still wear out. There's no shame is sharing experiences. Others may have a perfect experience. Good luck to them, but most will experience the same faults given enough use and length of ownership.

I'd be interested to see if any non-996 GT3 gets down to $150k in NZ (and 996s will probably be above that soon too!), since that is well below UK prices, although Macca will point out we are different from the UK!

Not just that market different but also because UK prices don't have tide pull until they are around double NZD equivalent for export due to all the reasons discussed before here and also by PM ( proven recently with the exported 3.6t and the deal on the 993RS). For example good uk new 6.1 GT3 can be had 60k gbp private (125k approx) in UK. But you can't get a UK buyer to pay more than 40k gbp (83k NZD) for one in NZ because that's 55k landed. Same for 991 GT3. 150k gbp = 220k NZD - no more than trade offered a few weeks back in NZ to a friend with a 2013 13k km on the 991 GT3RS.

Two things can change this and make the cars start to leave NZ in greater volumes.

Currency (GBP is strengthening a bit now)
UK classic car bubble

Remember this is time of very cheap funds and very many baby boomer. Bigger country even more # baby boomer as function of % but same small pool of cars. Like iWatch it does make you wonder what will happen to mechanical watch demand once people become addicted to the quality of life/convenience/welfare can be offered by the iWatch as part of greater IOS ecosystem with apps and functions/uses still not dreamed up. How many late teens early 20s kids today interested in cars let alone old cars? We have tonnes of friends with kids in early 20s virtually none want to take a ride in uncle Macca 911. Where's it going medium term?

Drive enjoy

Agree on the UK stuff, but does that mean we will get $150k GT3s? Maybe

Yeah I'd be very interested to see what current teenagers turn out like for car taste. My 16 year old nephew thinks the CSL is the business and would rather ride in that than many other more expensive options, not sure why! Achievable I guess. My friend and I often muse over why now that we can afford it we don't buy the Japanese sports cars of our 18 year old dreams (although my ultimate, 22B, isn't exactly cheap) however I think tastes move on, sadly. A nice 98 Spec Integra Type R would still be fun for the track.

Similarly some posts of the Facebook page of Euro Car Club NZ (great indicator of what teenagers and early 20s are into and their general level of grammar!) give some interesting insight. A recent one asking what people would prefer a 355 or a R35 GTR and a lot said R35. Not for me thanks!

That said for me pretty much up to the age of 25 the fastest = the best. I could not understand how anyone could like car that was outgunned, like say a 996 GT3 vs Turbo. However I've now done a 180 and realise that on NZ roads I'd much rather have fun than power! I'd still have a 996 GT3 and Turbo in my Lotto garage though

Similar question for watches. I have been eyeing up a Rolex lately to pass down but was concerned any future progeny might not be interested. My wife however pointed out that if it is something I value then it will likely be the same for my kids so that put my mind at ease. I know there will be at least some kids who love nice watches and manual NA cars!

It's the driving gloves and loafers freaking them out!

But I completely agree. I have siblings who fit in that age bracket, and they're not really interested in cars, and I think humor me when I start a Porsche rant only because we're related.

But there will be enough interest from people in their late 20's now, with $$ to burn in the future, to stimulate the "classic" industry for a while yet I think.

Yep, it's basically our fault for keeping them going: http://jalopnik.com/how-the-hell-are...ble-1709270257
