993 Targa

A lot of the sports cars I would like to buy are open top, however I do worry about them in roll-overs. I would never put a cage in one either because I think that ruins them. Bit of a conundrum.

Think I have tried them all on Road and track. gt3 (996), boxster S 3.2, Fraser (Caterham type).

I have to say I enjoyed the Boxster as an open top road car more than I thought I would and would perhaps still want another car like that. The only thing was though that it definitely had some feel through the steering that reflected the lack of stiffness. I find the R vs Spyder comparison in the Overbeek vid puzzling as we are always told that for track stiffer shell is better. And the outright race cars that are designed open are much higher tech (carbon etc) It is quite possible that the Spyder was a particularly good one and the R less so and given these are still some way short of race spec the lack of stiffness is not betraying the Spyder.

Doug knows but the funny thing about an open car is that you actually enjoy it most NOT going fast as there is too much turbulence at high speed.

re the Fraser it is about as extreme as it could be. No windscreen just an aero fairing like a bike(smaller in height probably) yet I really enjoy driving it around town relatively short distances with a beanie and glasses on if a fine day. In fact took it to work yesterday. The exposed feeling makes everything feel much more direct and immediate. On road it is fun even not going over 70kph. On track even with helmet on it is the same, a big buzz. On trackdays you do have to take some care given how small and exposed it is but I don't think I will sell it until I cant drive it anymore. (13/14 years owned so far). Just need to be sensible and very aware of track position and speed of others. I would never take it on Targa though as several have done. That's madness.

I do feel safe in the Boxster including on the track. The integrated roll over bars are solidly mounted to the chassis and you sit nicely below them and the windscreen. The windscreen has high strength steel and there are air bags for Africa. On track I keep the hood and windows up to protect against arms flying and getting caught in a roll over situation.

I'm happy travelling at higher speeds with the roof down (off public roads obviously). You can hear so much more engine and exhaust noise. However, but best top down comfort is cruising at around 100kph on the open road with the misses.
