Dougie - on the insurance front, I am talking to Prestegio now as my policy has fallen due. I just got a market val of $80K for my car as I wanted to better secure my position given the money being spent over the last 12 months. The 'hook' in the policy is the wording saying agreed value up to 120% of market value. I responded saying that the market value for a manual 993 may have a 100% spread and could be $80K or $45K given on milage, condition, colour combo and whether NZ new or an import, and that I didn't want to run the risk of them assessing the market value at $50-60K and because the agreed value of $80K is more than 120% of $50-60K, they revert to the market value, and the agreed value becomes pointless. I have asked if we can endorse the written valuation as the market valuation for the next 12 months (and they have gone quiet)..........

Paul , who was that person you recommended for house insurance valuation calcs? The web calc is giving a figure I have trouble believing as in it seems excessive.

For your house allow $3,000m2, plus $100K for landscaping (retaining walls in your case). I'm guessing your house is around 280m2 so about $840K to build now (and sounds about right).
Make sure your household contents is at $150K for chattels and furniture.

Thanks to John's inspiration I've gone through my RSG related photos this year and selected a few highlights.
Note to self: Take more photos of the people and less of the cars. It has been an amazing year with some pretty solid bonding opportunities. Looking forward to getting back to using over a tank of gas in a day and hearing the sound of the 3.6 aircooled at 6,500rpm (was going to say 7,000 but don't want to upset Dave :-))

Would be interesting to hear your hypothetical costs to get back to where you are now but within the next 12 months starting from scratch:
Buy base car 993 C2 $60-70k (more?)
Suspension upgrade etc $8k including labour?
Chip $500
Golden rod $500
Wheels $2.5k (or would you have to pay more to replace them)
Paint job $15k?
What else to get yourself back to where you are now? and what does it total?
Or, is insurance designed to just cover some of your loss? an analagy... If your house burns down are you expected to suffer a personal financial loss in the equation despite having the correct insurance and having paid full premiums for tens of years?
The policy for a new car is great. If w/o within 12-24 months (depending on policy etc), replacement with a new car of the equivalent spec. We need the same protection against loss for old classic cars, at least the full cash replacement component. I'm sure none of us mind paying the required premium.

So in a write off situation you could replace your car (recover your loss) for a cost of $80k sometime in 2015. Somehow I doubt it Paul. Isn't that what we have insurance for - to cover our personal risk of loss and to cover the cost of replacement.

I could itemise all those changes and add to the value.
I just wanted to be less out of pocket should something bad happen.
Would be interested to know how hotrods and drift cars work - some of those cars have $300K into them.
