It's a labour based effort, mostly. I think to lower the cost you'd need to do some of your own prep i.e. removing glass and trim etc, then refitting it.

I imagine there could be some corrosion to deal with as well. The GPW Targa had windscreen, sill and battery area repairs. The GPW tip has some rust as well, although not sure where and how much. I've seen no corrosion on Herman but am prepared for windscreen scuttle surprises. The Turbo 3.6 has spent most of its life under cover so I'd hope it's less likely to have issues.

A full glass out respray would be the best way to give your car a clean bill of health but let's face it, you'd be reluctant to drive it in anger again and you'd never realise the spend when it comes to resale. More and more I think Doug got a great purchase. Possibly the most expensive purchase price out there, but a known history. The GPW Targa was a reasonable buy but only if you accept its current condition for a long time.

John. My 993 has had the beginnings of rust dealt with front and rear windows when the car was repainted. Wasnt at all visible till the windows were lifted. Luckily it was only just appearing but the car barely gets wet in the last 10 years. Its caused by water sitting in the front window lower corner channels after a wash etc. Its almost certain these areas will need attending to if you are doing a proper respray - its an age and design related issue. I helped with the labour to prepare my car which helped lowe the cost as you suggest - you need a friendly painter to allow this as I suspect these days its all about work place ACC and insurance! Luckily I've had a bit of paint shop experience in a previous life. I paid 6K for mine in 2005. The rubber seals and fastenings that you are best advised to replace at same time add around 1.5K+ to the job (the door seals and sunroof seals being the most expensive).

The problem is as you pointed out after a full glass out respray the car becomes a garage queen and it takes a very determined person to then give it the rag. Took me from 2006 until 2010 to "get over it". A dose of mortality will do. Unfortunately I suspect the next time mine gets a full glass out respray it will no longer then get used in anger and thats a real shame so Im putting that day off way into the future and building up a credible "street/track patina" instead ;-)

The A type tendencies love this type of thread but I don't think I'd ever do it.

Chicane Racewear in Penrose http://www.chicane.co.nz/products.asp?CategoryID=9. Ring Shane before visiting on Saturdays.

Make sure you get one with Hans holes. If you buy the Necksgen posts for $138 then you can use my Necksgen with BB without doing the full $700 cost of the system

Btw I bought the GT37.

Suggest if you have already fitted up for something you like then buy ex USA for about 60% the NZ retail price. My Bell Mag2 open face with Hans support was $240 USD and the full face HJC was $399.
