Or maybe it’s a good thing and I’ll pick another 996 up after the big crash.
In your opinion what makes a 996 special?

The goal is to combine two or more...
1. Mezger (manual coupe)
2. 4S (manual coupe)
3. 1999 with #408's (build-date thru 7/98)
4. Unicorn color (PCA's official five)
5. Sunroof Delete (option not blowtorch)
In that order of collectibility, everything else: meh
Hint: GT's are already Mezger, sunroof deletes; all you need to choose is the unicorn color!

Right, some of these unicorn colors are nice to see on other people's cars, but Zanzibar Red is definitely one I'd like myself. Among Speed Yellow and Vesuvio. Although I'm quite happy with my -more common- Ocean Blue since it's a little more under the radar.

Got any other internet opinions that you’d like us to accept as gospel? We’re all ears.

The most collectible 996s are lowest volume with unique characteristics that are well maintained with low miles. Collectible does not equate to what is selling today.
Regarding unicorn colors, i certainly love a unique color, but most of us wont buy one nor ever drive one. Kinda like wearing a bright pastel colored bathing suit on the beach with a beer belly. Some can get away with it, but most can't.
No sunroof, only if you live in a location without sun.

Polar Silver Targas are the best 996s, AND most collectible.

I am bullish on metals, especially metal colored paint.

No love for the 40AE??
They had a unicorn color, all the hotrod options and full leather. The wheels are even as light as 408s. The color isn’t so unicorn anymore, though.

You'd be surprised and until going to a couple events, didn't realize how uncommon it was to see a Slate 996.2. I've had people ask on several occasions if the car was repainted in Agate not realizing it was a factory Slate car, you should see it side by side to Seal Gray. While it doesn't stand out like Zanzibar or Violet, it is very subtle.

Slate is grey, and was Steve McQueen’s favorite 911 color (he drove one in the movie “LeMans”)
Therefore any PTS non-metallic Slate Grey 911 is literally priceless on Hollywood provenance alone
And the Slate Grey Metallics are ALL hen’$ teeth rare (worth by association)
Agree 100%
