I suppose. The soccer moms in Macans still look down on me. Physically and metaphorically. They don't know they're driving an Audi Q5 with nicer leather
Having owned both a Q5 and a Macan, they're really not very much alike at all (besides being based a similar foundation). The Q5 was the best DD we ever had and the Macan is even better. Ergonomically, the Macan is too complex, but it drives even better than the Q5, and we thought the Q5 was phenomenal. Had a Cayenne as a loaner, felt like a heavy SUV, the Macan feels like a sports car -- that is, until you hop back in the 996 and bask in a true lightweight sports car and the utter simplicity (ergonomically) of early 2000 cars.
Compared to my 1999 the Macan loaner felt like a stealth fighter cockpit Gorilla-glued onto a bamboo rickshaw.

Really???? THE thing that is most impressive is the rigidity of the chassis. Same with the Q5 -- it felt absolutely just as solid when I traded it in a 105k miles as it did new. In comparison, the X5 that I traded in for the Q5 felt loose and weak at 100k miles. The BMW was a very tired car at 100k, the Q5 was just getting started at 100k. Expect the same from the same from Macan. Whatever you do, don't drive a new Mercedes SUV -- that chassis feels weak -- I would say definitely rickshaw-like in fact (Mercedes lost their tank-like rigidity in the very early '90's).
The lightweight feeling of the 996 is no comparison, obviously, but I don't agree at all on chassis rigidity.
Saying that a Macan is a fancy Q5 is just parroting what other say.... Even though the platform is similar, Porsche completely redesigned the suspension set up and geometry which accounts for a lot how the car feels and drives.
I loved the macan, but it was too much 911 and not enough CUV for me. I get that Porsche is trying to be a "drivers" car but it's a lot of money for no ACC and having to turn a key.

It's the plague of the Internet. The Internet giveth and it taketh away regarding education. It's the same misinformation about 996's being horrible cars. When it comes to buying cars, misinformation creates tremendous buying opportunities (for example, when the Internet "knows" the 996 sucks).
It was the same with the Ferrari Mondial. The first model, the Mondial 8, was actually a terrible car because of overstressed electronics and emissions-mandated EFI killing the power of the previously potent 308 engine making the Mondial 8 slow. The subsequent Mondial QV, 3.2, and t models that followed the 8 fixed all of the problems and were among Ferrari's best in many ways because of the blend of comfort, practicality with the raw edge of 80's slotted-shifting Ferraris. You could buy those great Mondial models for nothing, literally for decades, because of the reverberating Internet education echo chamber from the Mondial 8 -- a car that existed for only 2 years out of the Mondial's 13-year production run. Now, those later models are selling for double the price of a few years ago.
I’m just too prejudiced against SUV’s in general to criticize the Macan fairly. It probably is a rock solid platform, I just couldn’t personally wait to get out of it and back into a 911.
People need to stop buying cars based on specs or what other say. Simply ask yourself one question - what kind of experience do you want to have? You can't put a 911 and a Macan in the same boat. You shouldn't even do that with a 911 and let's say an M3. Smart manufacturers will begin to market cars based on an experience and not a 0-60 times.

Sure. Luckily a car is more than the platform it's built on. So saying they're the same because of a shared platform is wrong. How many new cars today do not share their platform with another model? I can only think of the Miata.

Indeed. Right before the pandemic hit, we tested both the Q5 and the Macan. The latter was far and away nicer in every aspect. From the interior to the way it drove. Awesome machine. We ended up with a 2020 A4 Allroad since it's not an SUV and also an awesome machine
I thought the deals were gone, but I just lucked into purchasing a two owner early 99 that a friend was selling. He owned it for 17 years, and took great care of it.
Guards Red 106k with LSD, and the perfect amount of upgrades. Fab speed exhaust, PSS9s, camber plates, sway bars, and a roll bar. All original parts included. I just need to source some amber triangles with roughly 100k on them.
