I am new to the 996 world. I recently acquired a 1999 C2. Oh, before I start, thanks to the online communities of this site and Renntech. This would have taken much longer to accomplish without this valuable information being so readily available.
First thing I needed to do was to straighten out the pegged oil pressure gauge. Disconnected the wiring, wire brushed the connectors, sprayed contact cleaner on them and reconnected. Oil pressure gauge fixed!
Next, replace the ignition switch. Not before killing the 5 year old battery. So, now the switch is as it should be and a new battery is in place. Next, adjust the front lid. It was really hard to get it latched. It felt like i was going to dent the hood. Removed the latch and lubed with white lithium grease, now opens and closes as it should.
Next vacuum out the radiators. I am sure there is probably more in there, but I believe they are pretty good for now.
Next, change crankcase oil and oil filter. Grabbed an oil sample while I was at it. Opened the oil filter up and it looked pristine in there. Oil analysis report is pending.
Driver side window regulator needs replaced soon, the passenger side ASAP.
Transaxle gear lube is in the near future.
Check the air filter.
Eventually change the coolant.
There is always something to do around my place. And by the way, all this work is SO WORTH IT! I love driving this car!
Picked up my coupe today from the dealer, had 3 things done that were on the to-do list:
1) Plugs and Coils, had been 7 years since the last replacement, just for preventative maintenance
2) 2 new key fobs programmed! Dealer did it for cheap, blades from keys in the post (awesome to work with)
3) Center radiator installed (last track day, WOW it was hot, and my coolant temp was crazy high)
Now looking forward to the next track day to test the coolant temps!
Very good work Doug, can you share some pictures? Sounds like a nice example.
Ratchet,
I did not take any pictures. Everything I learned was documented stuff on either this site or Renntech. The text and pictures at both locations were extremely helpful. Concerning my car, so far it seems to be a pretty good car. The interior and exterior finishes are in pretty good shape for a 20 year old car, especially one that apparently spent a good part of its lift in Montana. I probably could have been a little more studied up on the foibles of the 996, but so far I am very happy with the car.
I did my early morning Sunday drive along the west shore of Hood Canal today. I did not encounter any traffic in front of me either direction! Absolute heaven.
Doug
Met some new car people today and got to test Porsches acceleration in safe environment (not closed, but only one entrance behind us and completely straight road with nothing blocking vision). Mercedes guy is my old friend, and these others are his friends that I didn't know about.
Was fun to drive with other semi fast cars (200SX has ~300hp RB20, Golf was GTI model with some tuning and Merc has 250hp/600nm. Porsche was the fastest one, but 200SX gave it a good run.
Was drying my car after washing the bugs off from a moonlight drive and forgot the key was is the on position so I could raise the spoiler to clean it and now the battery is dead. My first chance to use the rear battery lug to charge the battery! Routing the engine compartment lid cable to below the rear taillight worked!
Met LN Engineering "Charles" at Car Week Monterey.
Nice guy.
He had a 20k mile IMSS from a car he did. Car failed, not from IMSB poisoning but Bore Scoring so it was being rebuilt. He offered owner a new IMSS so he could test and show the wear or lack of in this case of the IMSS.
Pretty cool to see no visible signs of wear.
While insanely expensive for a preventative maintenance (non performance upgrade) part it does eliminate the IMSB risk.
LOVE the color of your car! More pics of the green would be appreciated!
Thanks! It's Avery Dennissons Pearl Dark Green wrap. There are some older photos in this thread around page 90 (can't remember exact page and I'm on phone atm). But here's couple pics:
Personally I love how it seems to change color according to weather and lighting
Yesterday I plugged in the battery tender and I locked it in the garage.
Then I left on my first vacation in a LONG time.
I “forgot” to leave a key with our house sitter.
So now I can enjoy relaxing in San Antonio without having Risky Business nightmares.
He can drive the Mustang while we’re gone, but not my 911.
