No one’s forcing them to pay for extended warranties. How much is a Carmax and Fidelity 5yr/100k warranty for a McLaren or Ferrari? How about Pagani? What are the costs to repair a McLaren or Ferrari without warranty compared to Porsche?
You seem to know how to run a profitable exotic car company. Consider buying or starting one and show them how it’s done, starting with 10yr/100k warranty.

Apparently McLaren doesn’t know how to run an exotic car company either because their car values drop off a cliff. They’ll be in bankruptcy along with Aston Martin in short order.
As a McLaren owner you should be pretty pissed about the way they’re running the brand, not sure why you’re trying to defend them so much. The cars are fantastic, but the ownership experience sounds miserable.

Does it cost 10x more to fix a part on a McLaren compared to a Porsche? 2x maybe, 3x possibly, 10x don’t think so. A warranty company also has to make a profit margin on the repairs. The car company has to consider its value to the brand as a whole. Those are two very different things.

The warranty talk is interesting, and it has been a major discussion point throughout this thread. I think it’s a representation of the identity problem that the YouTuber lays out.
McLaren is a relatively nascent company that seeks to battle - ambitiously - on numerous fronts:
They want to compete with Porsche and other marques that mass produce cars that can be relied upon as a primary vehicle / daily driver; ANY modern Porsche can be relied upon to crank every day without a dash full of fault codes or frequent dealer visits or interminable repair times (notwithstanding a 918, and it MIGHT be up to those tasks too).
They want to compete with Ferrari and Lamborghini on the next rung up the ladder - 488/F8 and Huracan. Those cars probably could be driven every day but most owners don’t ask that of those cars.
They want to compete with Hypercar manufacturers in the rarefied $1MM+ segment, as well. McLaren has produced/announced four Ultimate Series models over the past decade - P1, Senna, Speedtail, Elva. Ferrari, which has a much stronger brand and higher production numbers hasn’t offered that degree of hypercar offering in that time period.
McLaren needs to decide which market segment is the most important to them and focus there; the hypercar clientele often has significant time demands, multiple residences, multiple cars. Warranty/reliability is less important to them. The Porsche convert clientele cares a great deal about about warranty/reliability, and the soft secondary market prices for the super series often bring them into the realm of affordability for this group (except the warranty gamble). The original purchaser of the supercar product is probably in the middle of this continuum.

Interesting subject on warranty purchase. I’ve never purchased a warranty on anything in my life, and I do have a standing joke when asked to purchase .......I told the guy a Range Rover let’s xcld the deal because you’re telling your new car is no good should have saw his face(: Yes, I got the car and no warranty and I’ve had many cars outside of warranty and yes it broke and I paid the cost and move on cost of ownership. My Ferrari was outside of warrant, but still the 7 year MTC program which is nothing more than oil and stuff not a big deal. The most expense on the Ferrari was less than 1k dollars during my ownership. 5 Porsche’s since 2012 no issues, well never had one outside of warranty. My 675LT came with a warranty when I purchased, and I can buy a 2 year warranty for 9400.00 and I will possibly pass again I’ve had zero issues ....well one repaid a leaking lose warranty covered it was 1600.00. The money was all in the labor not the parts. The service department are cash cows, and it pays for the expensive show room and the pretty service bays. I’m sure we have many lawyers here, and you charge a pretty good rate per hour.
Porsche’s no matter what model you get it’s massed produced and the supply chain with parts on hand is pretty robust with 60 years of getting it right. That’s why I love the Porsche brand which is the safe bet like a good house wife that does everything well. Sometimes you want a wild expensive escort, and yes she’s expensive (Ferrari, Mclaren, Lambo) but you had the time of your life. It’s not always about the expense, but the experience. I can buy pretty much any super car new, but I choose to get my escort that’s been around the block a couple of times because she knows what’s she doing. (Guys I’m talking about a used car) I always buy my Porsche house wives new because I know what I’m getting, and my mom will love her. The others, my mom just says really .......I say they’re fun .........don’t cheat yourself on experience if you can do it. I have a rule of thumb I will not buy anything if I have to debate the insurance cost or cost to fix, and I’m pretty cheap/but I will always pay for fun if the experience is memorable. I will say my Ferrari experience was a lifetime box check, and the Mclaren when I drive it I just say OMG. Porsche will ALWAYS be in my garage, but I will dial up an escort every now and then. Nothing wrong with trying other things, and I will never be a one brand person again because I saw what I was missing. Buy what sets your soul on fire.

From what I've read over on mclaren life it seems like they do sell for a lot less in the UK.

Financial suicide is pricing your cars out of the market, cheapening the brand by doing it, and turning away potential buyers because they see the crazy high ownership costs. The long term warranty would fix a lot of those problems in one fell swoop. Sometimes you need to think big to turn around a dying brand. I agree with the dude in the video 100%.
-McLaren produces too many cars relative to demand. When you've got brand new units of even LT models sitting on showroom floors, you've probably produced too many. The consequence is that they've got to discount those cars to move them
-Deep discounts on new cars depress the value of used cars
-The dealer network is not as extensive as the other brands. This shrinks the pool of potential buyers because there are people who won't buy such a car if there's no dealer nearby.
-Related to previous point, there aren't a lot of independent shops that specialize in Macs, if any. Indy shops could fill the gap of cities without dealerships, and they can provide more cost effective service options
-McLaren still has an uneven reputation for build quality and reliability. People buying the car new may have more tolerance for niggles, but poor quality can sour first time owners and turn away potential new buyers. There are plenty of people who get rock solid Macs, but there's still enough unhappy people to affect the general perception of quality.
Mclaren has improved on a couple of those factors over the years. Reducing the cost for extended warranties might be a fast way to improve customer confidence in buying used units. But Mclaren also has to get better at either correctly estimating demand or improving the value proposition/desirability of new cars.
