I didn’t think rubstrips were available as an option in ‘78.

I now have a new standard to try and restore a car to. Also, I love that it's a cloth seat, I much prefer cloth to leather.

I wonder what it would take to restore a car to this condition. Reupholstering every cloth or leather covered surface, for sure, but what about the dash and console? I don't know how to save plastics, and getting new sounds very expensive.

It depends on the condition of the car that you're starting with, but generally I'd say tens of thousands of dollars. For reference on the interior alone, the Pasha interior and dash/pod/wheel/shift boot were all refurbished on my car to the tune of about $8000.

If you're starting off with a decent example, then keep in mind that the original unrestored patina can be valuable too. It seems that the market for "original" cars in general has been growing a lot over the past few years. I think people have begun to realize that a car is only original once and there's some value to that.

BTW, where are you at in the ATL? I'm on the south side.

The fact that Bohnams is offering the car says quite a bit too about how the 928 has come along.

The 928 is one of those cars I'll want to own forever, along with an Alfa 105 and a lancia 037 (although I have no expectations of getting an original 037, there's a company in New Zealand that makes replacement panels for the originals and offers a kit to convert a lancia scorpion/montecarlo into one, and because lancia developed the 037 from the montecarlo in the first place it's pretty damn closer to the original). Because I don't expect to sell it once I own it, and due to my tendency to tinker it will slowly evolve into a mishmash of trim levels (early body, fettled 32v engine, maybe the Corvette transmission - although I do like doglegs, etc) I'm not too fussed about resale value. Nor am I too fussed about originality. I wouldn't care if the cloth is original Porsche, so long as it has the right look, and that plaid really pops to me, so I won't be hung up on finding expensive pascha.

I'm in Roswell/Alpharetta. I'm only just starting to get my bearings in Atlanta though, despite growing up in Athens I didn't spend much time in Atlanta and only just moved here after finishing at UGA.

this is exactly the information i almost posted about yesterday, trying to determine the relative costs of restoring an early example that is in need of a lot in the interior. does your $8k figure include door card refurbishment and/or any trim recovering work? i'm looking at a car that would need a dash, a pod, pasha interior, door cards redone, and various trim pieces recovered. the idea of all of that work concerns me on the back end. it would be a great completed car, but the idea of heading into what would likely turn into a full-blown restoration is not ideal at the moment. it's a tough choice to make.

The work was done almost two years ago, prior to my ownership. Classic9 did the work with the stitching work all being done by Rod (who is now the new owner of Classic9). They did everything including the carpet except for the roof liner. I think they also recovered the rear side panels but I not 100% sure if that was part of it. The dash and pod were covered in vinyl as opposed to leather so that would potentially affect your pricing as well.

This one is pretty cool. Especially if you are over in the UK.

Wow!

Very exceptional car indeed.
It will be interesting to see how much it will sell for.
Hum...

Thanks for the link Nate.

I spoke to the owner of this - it hits a lot of my buttons but not for $30K, nor $20K. The miles are low so if someone wants a collector and will paint it, then here you are:

He said he's fixed a lot of small things, has had it for 4-5 yrs.
This is in Catonsville, MD, a Baltimore suburb.

awesome! they're about a mile from where I work and directly on my commute, that's perfect. I'll have to call and see if I could come by someday when it's slow.

If I were in the market for a GT...any year, I'd be all over this ^ one.
Not many GTs come along that are truly turn key. Here's one.
