Any Rennlisters from New Zealand?
Fantastic value for sure. If the fringe componentary spend outside of the bulletproof Mezger engine is quite high, imagine the potential for disaster that a regular 996 carries when you include a ticking time bomb engine? I can safely say that I will never own a non Mezger 996. I said that about 964's once.
^^^ I agree. The Mezger based engine isnt perfect but none of its follies are particularly terminal like with the M96.
The above being said as a result of the 996 being tainted and unloved (sounds like 964s a decade+ ago with leaky gasket free heads and failing LUK clutch etc) they are incredibly cheap and getting cheaper by the month. In the UK you can pick up a reasonable early 996 C2 manual for around 18K NZD. I cant see them getting any cheaper as their parts value is probably similar.

I will have to grovel for another drive of your 3.6T before you sell it
.
I'll tell you before the Turbo 3.6 sells, but don't panic it won't happen anytime soon. If we can get the South Island trip sorted for next year it will be my car of choice for that.
I cant see you buying a race car and circulating HD slower than your 993 or me in mine for very long mate. Just being a realist here.
Matt can chip in here. I think a 996 GT3 is still the most logical upgrade from a 993. Assume 95K once purchased and you have everything sorted to your satisfaction (brakes, exhaust, wheels, tyres etc). Basically thats another 20K on from where you are at with the 993 now.
You have two options if you want one competitive 911. Ive had a good think on this and I think its possible to push the 993 to 1.15.8 at HD without engine work. Mainly suspension, brakes and a bit of weight reduction (easy for you with lighter seats etc). I believe it would definitely be quicker than a GT3 up to 3.8 generation through the corners and under brakes to get that time but obviously looses with its 100-150 bhp deficit.
The next stage on above would be to throw $30K at a factory style 3.8 upgrade using Mahl pistons and heads etc. With some nice porting and smart cam choice you could probably with a good builder get an optimised 315-320 bhp on motronics for a very reliable street and track package and it would be like a factory 3.8 993 then. Nothing too hot rod - something solid and dependable. Steve could build this. The key here would be using ARP & maybe Pauter rods with better springs and retainers to lift the limiter to 7400 and get a cam specialist like webcam to supply a billet cam with around 2.4mm lift that can push the power peak up around 6900 rpm.
An engine like above gives you the benefit of "torque" more than power outright. You should be seeing around 280+lbft if its well build and tuned even using stock intake manifolds, airbox and MAF. Thats another 30+lbft on the 3.6 and flatter too.
With a 7400 limiter you will beable to hang onto 3rd gear longer at HD, and teh smaller tracks *Manfield, Levels, Teretonga etc). This would be really handy as both of us were driving to the limiter in 3rd on those tracks and just bouncing the needle till the down change! Another 500 rpm headroom and it would be majic, especially with a higher peak power rpm and even down teh straights where you would short shift around 7000 it gives you another 400 rpm up your seleve for overrun.
Trick with above engine would be LWFC and pullys etc keep the repricating mass down so it still revs like a 3.6 or faster.
What would it be worth at HD? Lots of speculating here but the clear gains would be coming out of corners and on the 2 smaller straights and naturally the big long one. Looking at historic traces Id have to say 1s down the main straight - you should get a vMax around 212-214kmph with that extra 15% slug of torque. Obviously less gained in the shorter straights but I do believe some advantage with at least one less gear shift per lap at HD. Id say another 0.5s all round but with some left on the table once you got used to getting the best from the power delivery.
So 1.15.8 could see you down to 1.14.3 with the right skill set and a nicely set up 3.8/320/280 engine with stronger rods/bolts/springs and the correct cam and increased rev limiter. In the right hands this could be better (or likely in my hands worse LOL).
Just something to chew on. Its definitely where I see the development of my own car heading over time. I think ultimately there is something satisfying about taking an archaic platform and making it handle much better giving cars that are much newer something to be nervous about (not that I expect any 93 to keep up with the 996-997 gen GT3s if they are driven well but nice to beable to keep them in visibility for an entire 7 laps!). What a dream it would be to be doing 1.14s in an old girl just for ****s & giggles. Bet it will feel way scarier than doing a 1.14 in a 2010 GT3!
John - Sue's car is really nice - but I am not sure I can own a car called 'Popsical'
.
Sue's 964 can't be road registered, so is a direct comparison to a Cup Car.
GT3 (road cars) cost twice as much and are slower than Cup Cars. The only (but very significant benefit for me) is a rego and no trailer.
You also can't race a GT3 as it needs a roll cage. So you are limited to Play Days (not necessarily a bad thing?)

20 years ago I was a Prost man and couldn't stand Senna, after watching his documentary and reading more about the man, I think I backed the wrong horse.

Apart from qualifying at Monaco, this lesson in how to heel and toe in loafers is my favourite Senna clip.

You know Macca wears lofa's like that (I and thought he was just being a style icon, now I know it's to drive faster??)
